Hello, our peugeot boxer 2.5td has just failed its mot on the emissions - the tester hasnt even done the test due to excessive smoke caused by what he says is "insuficient governing" i took it to a diesel specialist and he asked if it had been stood which it has and said give it a run and put some treatment in it and it will probly pass! but im concerned if it fails then ive lost my free retest!

Has anyone else experienced this problem - the air filter looks clean! any tips/ checks i can do?

The smoke isnt actually that bad and ive never noticed it before!

Thanks in advance Luke!

Hi

Have also queried excessive somoking with our AutoCruise, and was told to put some diesel treatment in the tank and gice it a damn good run to clear it out.  Thankfully, it solved it.

Hope this helps

Regards
Richard

One of the first articles I read in MMM  about 18 months ago was exactly about this problem. The author of the article had written to say that his motorhome had failed the emissions test. He was advised by the mechanic to take his motorhome on a twenty miles return motorway trip and 'open it up' (his words not mine). The author of the article said he did as he was advised and his motorhome passed the re-test with flying colours.

Hiya Luke

It was the STP diesel treatment and as Don says, shove it in yer tank and thrash the engine within an inch of it's life - 20 miles is enough to get it all cleaned thru, but make sure your tank is only about 1/4 full when you add the stuff so it don't get diluted too much.

If you need any more help, mail me at rh@dsl.pipex.com

Cheers
Rich

I believe in the trade it's called "an italian tune up" !

As above, stick some additive in.  Can also help to put some "advanced" diesel in such as BP Ultimate - supposed to have more detergents.

I Use Millers diesel additive, have done for a while, its excellent, and apparentley (So I read) its one of the best.

I use it on every refill now, but its also designed to treat emissions pre MOT

It was only £6.99

hehe, my car failed its emmissions aswell, so took the car for a spin, gave it plenty of revs to cleare all the soot (made me cringe revving it that hard) and turned the max throttle position down so the tester couldn't rev it as hard took it back and it passed, though i've yet to turn the throtle limiter back up

KathyandLuke

Isn't good to hear of a success story. It just goes to show the value of this site. If some of us can't give you the answer to a query, we know a man or a woman who can.

Don M

Edit. Quickly adds 'a woman' to text. They also do thier fair share on here.
