Hi panagah,as you know the car will have brakes, otherwise you would not drive it, my Car-A-Tow frame folds and stores in the boot of my little Suzuki Alto, its great after settting up on site to use to run arround with as is your Panda,no drive aeay awnings needed,so can use the full Fiamma privy room.also believe it or not,the Smart Car is heavier than a Panda or an Alto.

Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.

I hate to resurrect a thread but here goes and it might save you some money

"A" frames, despite what we are told, are not legal for use in Belgium or Germany. They are only allowed to remove a vehicle to the nearest garage.

The Spanish police have been cracking down on them and now the French are following suit. If you read up on some of the other Motorhome forums you will find plenty of first hand experiences on this.

The Spanish have even been making people disconnect the towed vehicle and continue their journey with each vehicle being driven separately. A bit difficult if you are on your own.

I know that the various "A" frame companies give out "letters" to hand to a Policeman if you are stopped. The way that the Spanish and French Police are now going they might as well have saved the trees.

I was on the verge of getting an "A" frame. What a terrific system; handy, convenient and no faffing about with a trailer but as soon as I saw all the trouble that some people have had I decided on a trailer.

There is the Vienna Convention on towed vehicles and there is no way that a car towed by an "A" frame can conform. The clinching argument is as follows - Apparently there are further grey areas in the UK regarding overrun brake mechanisms required for a braked trailer (for that is what the towed car becomes), and the disengagement of the trailer's brakes when reversing (which cannot be done with a car).  It is only a matter of time before the UK Police get in on the act

Until A Frames have been to court they are not Legal in the UK or anywhere else, so when people say they are legal here they are wrong! We had an A Frame on a car towed in the UK and France never any problems with the Police, but did have the Brake cable jam and boiled the brake fluid and cooked the pads. We now tow a Smart on a trailer, must say the car stays a lot cleaner I can reverse it and its 100% legal what ever country we are in. Bob.
