Happy New Year to all!

We are thinking that this spring we might take the motorhome on the ferry from Ardrosson to Arran, stay for a bit and and then go onwards to Kintyre.   Are you allowed to stay in the motorhome on these fairly short ferry crossings?  I'm really asking because of the dog.  She's a bit of a nervous nellie and I think she would be happier inside the van - but I wouldn't want to leave her on her own.  Also, do you need to book in advance for these crossings or can you just turn up on the day?  Is there any other info I should know?

Much thanks for any advice.

Can't answer either question definitely I'm afraid but when we went (doing the same route as you propose) we did book and I seem to remember it was quite busy (it was a few years ago now and I can't remember what time of the year but it wouldn't have been in the peak).
Regarding travelling in the van have you seen   this page about pets on the CalMac website? It looks like you will need to check with them to see which boats you can't have access to the car deck. The Ardrossan to Brodick boat is quite large like a real ferry and I would have thought the sort of ship where you wouldn't be allowed on the car deck. The Lochranza to Claonaig is a much smaller ship, just the cardeck and you walk straight through to a covered seating area so that one might be one you are allowed to stay in the vehicle. It was a really rough day when we went on that one and it was being chucked all over the place but on a normal crossing it doesn't take very long.

There's definately no access to the car deck on the Ardrossan run, but as evenstephen says, it looks as though the Lochranza ferry will be one of the smaller ones where there will be access.

Better to book the Ardrossan crossing, that ferry can be fully booked at peak times. Not all calmac routes take bookings, so, again maybe better to give them a phone.
