I wonder if anyone can help.  We are purchasing a house and there will be a few months before we can move in.  We need to sell our existing house.  How feasible would it be to buy a motorhome and live in that for a few months rather than have to rent a flat? How long would we be allowed to stay on one campsite? Any advice would be much appreciated as we are retired and a bit worried about where we can live for the next few months.

A caravan would be a far cheaper option, if it is just a stop gap. This is assuming you already own a car to pull it? You can get seasonal pitch's, though im not sure how long they go for, but im guessing its a good few months.

Thanks for that.  It's not an option we had considered but does make a lot of sense.  We will explore this avenue.  Many thanks

Many professionally run campsites have a 28 day rule after which you have to leave. It is to do with planning permissions and also site owners do not want you using the site address as your address even if temporary. If you have other campsites in your area not a problem as you just shuttle between them every few weeks.

What area do you live in & when do you intend to do this? If you live near any sort of coastal or tourist area & you want do it March onwards, you will have no problem arranging this. Just get your motorhome & book up on sites for 28 days at a time.

It may be worth joining the caravan club to get cheaper sites but if finance is no problem then I can't really see any problems for you.

As stated, if you have a reasonable sized car, Mondeo or whatever, a medium sized caravan, say late 90s can be bought off ebay for £2-3k & you can put it back on ebay when you are done with it, but for a motorhome you would be spending £12k or more.

But whatever you buy your idea is perfectly do-able. Any questions, just ask on here or the caravan forum.

We did exactly that nearly three years ago and due to several surveys coming back bad we are still living in a motorhome.

We like the life so much we have decided not to buy after several atempts at buying and with the recession and property going down in price might wait another year living in our motorhome seeing the world if you like before settling down again, we are also retired  and couldnt do this if we worked but I say enjoy it before you finally settle down as long as you get on with each other as living in close proximity to each other can be taxing sometimes24/7.

We are with the 2 main clubs and we use ukcampsites a lot as there is a lot of campsites available on here and sometimes have found sites on here rather than the 2 main other clubs.

We dont stay 28 days usually and when we have stayed 3 weeks we get itchy feet and want to move on.

As to your frist question, go for it you wont regret it, it may even change your life.

We stored our belongings for 2 years in a secure storage compound before we decided that it was the life for us in case we wanted to go back to living in a house again.

Can someone explain what a 'seasonal' pitch is? As Seasonal doesnt suggest a span as short as 28 days.

A seasonal pitch is renting the pitch continuously with 1 payment from about March-Oct so a possible option for the op.

Thanks to everyone for some brilliant advice and information.  We unfortunately do not live in a coastal area and need to be near to our baby grandson as we are involved in his care during the working week.  We would need to be in Hertfordshire.  Again, many thanks all.

If you click on 'campsite search' at the top of the page you will find a number of campsites in Hertfordshire, so worth a look.
