Can anyone tell me as I dont have a clue. Our 88 T25 Valerie.Coughs out so much grey smoke when I first start her. This goes on until we have run her up to op temp and then all seems fine.Well unless its dark then thats a different story. She has a 1.6 turbo,jx engine with nearly 300,000 on the clock.Other than this she does a sterling job.Can anyone help. Many thanks
I take it you mean grey/blue smoke, ie burnt oil? if has done 300K miles or even km on the same engine the bores will be worn & oil smoke on start up suggests worn valve guides or cracked head. I'm discounting turbo probs as you say the performance is ok. Is the oil consumption high?
The life of a JX engine in a T25 is usually about 100K miles. For economic reasons a garage would change whole engine but diy'ers could usually get away with changing cylinder head(usually cracked).
If the head has been changed a couple of times & the block is original then the real answer is a recon motor, some fit a secondhand 1.9AAZ motor from a mid 90s Golf but this sort of conversion needs a fair bit of diy input.
If you have mechanical knowledge & abilty to do your own spanner work, I guess you would not be posting your question on here. I can only say that if a garage does exploritory work they will charge for this & you may be no further forward, so I would say your way forward if you want reliable use out of the van is to eventually fit a recon engine.
The T25 specific websites are brick-yard & club80-90You would get more help if you register on these forums.
Turbo waste vent stuck?
My old VW T4 (None turbo) chucks out loads of smoke in the winter as a couple of heater plugs need replacing but after 30 seconds or so she runs clean.

Hi Monty59
My t25 had a new engine fitted last year just befor we bought it. Its an AAZ 1.9 diesel engine from a mid nineties golf. Theyre a common repplacement on the T25 and when fitted properly give a bit of extra reliability and also a bit more poke. It hasnt missed a beat.
And dont forget Bigtoe, you can run that on Veg oil too.
