Hi Caroline.
I live in Taunton and have wild camped in some lovely places. Kilve has a nice reclusive car park. The P&D machines are soon to be removed. New Forest is free and lovely sites. Beer beach is nice,Porlock is good. Do not be discouraged by the No Overnight Parking. It is mearly a deterent used by Local Councils to deter travellers who'll stay indefinately.
I stayed for the night in Baiter Park in Poole. The Parking Attendant was real friendly. Woke in the morning to the views of Brownsea Island.
If you want any photo's of places that I've stayed or more info just email me   rdw314 at yahoo.co.uk.

Hi there,

thanks so much for  your post on the UK Campsite Forum - I think yours has been the most useful, especially as you live in the same area so the places you visit are not too far away.  We have heard that the carpark at Porlock Weir is a good place to park but haven't tried it yet.

We love Beer, so any further info as to where you park there would be great, thanks.  Also pictures would be great, I can then sit here at my boring desk at work dreaming I was out in the van!!!

I tried to email you but it wouldn't send - said I had the wrong ad
you can email me at carolinemoon22 at yahoo.co.uk

Cheers & happy camping!

Caroline

If you can, take a look at the motorhomefun site and follow the "two more parking places closed" thread. Makes quite interesting reading. A trifle nasty too to blue badge holders. At least on here everyone seems friendly. Happy Holidays Joan

we stayed at the porlock weir carpark , in late october last year, the carpark is owned by the private estate , you pay for the longest time available , which is , i think , 16 hrs , for about a fiver, there are no signs saying you cant overnight camp, and we were left alone,we stayed 2 nights, beautiful views from the carpark , all is spread before you , looking out to sea, to the far left is the weir , and some old cottages , then sea , its a lovely little village ,very small so make sure you take your provisions with you, there are shops in porlock itself , which is a couple of miles back, you'l probably drive through it to get to the weir. the beach is a mass of grey cobbles, which also forms a lot of the local build , unless your desperate dan you wont be running it through your tootsies!

i was expecting a waterfall type weir but a weir is a way to hold back water, in this case two big gates for the small dock area. great pub across the road from your lodgings , lovely beer and good food , they have a fish and chip night ,cant remember which night , probably worth finding out as they say its well attended.

in the car park there are toilets, with all the new metal fitments, couldn't find a source of water to fill the tanks, we managed to get some at the pub , need a long hose, best be filled when you get there.

if you fancy a posh night out there are a couple of fancy restaurants, a craft centre  , a posh frock shop, looks like some good walks in the area, unfortunately most of the time we were there it was pouring down , and strong winds , imagine cathy and heathcliff would be right at home there!

thoroughly enjoyed our time there, well worth a visit. around that area also well worth going , brean down or the other way definitely clovelly, and a few miles outside of clovelly , go to the village of woolfordisbury, ask for woolsbury, as there is another one 40 miles away, on the sat nav its woolsbury, they have the best fish and chip shop for miles around. cod is superb, i tend to source the best fish shops , i came from hull as a boy so i know what a good bit of fish is like.. happy hunting,

to true !  just had Dinner of Fillet of Bambi's Dad guess the thought police will be knocking soon!   had the same re-action last year when I served Crayfish at a picnic.

Aren't Crayfish "Protected"  at the moment? I have no problems with eating them myself - just about to have some Bambi burgers as it happens

Turns out that native Crays are protected: Monsterous fine, do not pass go and possibly a visit at shower time from Big Bubba

From another website I use "Our native ones are protected, but the American signal crays are not, you need a permit from DEFRA to legally trap crayfish in the UK"    and   "just to reiterate, you even need a permit to take the Signal Crays. This is to stop any mug from catching and releasing (accidentally or on purpose) any specimens thus infesting other water courses."

So please be careful, not all food is for free. I would be very unhappy if I found anyone trying to help themselves any of my game

Hi Caroline.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to yoy. I have only just seen your message. I'm new to this forum business.

I'm in work at the mo but I'll email you some pictures of local places that I've stayed including Porlock.

If I want to 'escape' I often go to The Carew Arms in Crowcome and then spend the night on The Quantocks. You certainly don't need to go far to 'escape'

I'll email you soon.

Robert.

When I travelled on the inland waterways many years ago we used to scoop out crayfish with a bucket lashed to a boat pole. As long as it was a remote stretch of canal with no urban pollution and few boats stirring up the mud, the crayfish were quite palatable if a little bland.

As to rabbits, the dogs picked one or two up most days and we virtually lived on wild rabbit, the odd hare or two and, in the summer, young mallard (which are a bit disappointing). We also enjoyed pheasant whenever we could, er, 'find' one.

A mate of mine swore by rooks and crows but then he also claimed to have eaten roadkill muntjac and even badger (I always considered the latter a step too far).

To veggies (or, rather, to the evangelical and fundamentalist ones) I always point out that if God hadn't meant us to eat animals he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

Last year was holidaying with the camper down around Dawlish warren and no overnight parking was allowed and no other wild spots around that area.

We did stopover at the car park in Marazion £5 charge but be careful as the huge main park does not allow overnighting, in addition there is plenty of parking along the sea front and we stayed there overnight also with lots of other campers.

If you venture down to Cornwall the park at Mevagissey is camper friendly with specific spaces for campers ./coaches and they only charged us £10 to park for 24hrs.

The park and ride at Exeter matford is also good at £5 night and free bus about 10minutes to city centre we stayed there and at about 9.30pm security van arrived and said once you have your ticket up no problem but be aware some asb was going on so lock up well. All was well with our stay.

Have a look at UKMotorhomes .net for more info.

I took a trip to Gorleston in Norfolk yesterday.there were a number of motorhomes parked up besdes the cliffs.
I wonder how long it will be before there are complaints. It seems a bit odd that there are so many car parks with height barriers (there's one at the end of the cliff road at Gorleston) presumably this is to discourage travellers but it then means that motorhomes (who I'd guess seldom cause any real problems) have no alternative butto park by the side of the road.
