You could possibly get more selling privately rather than selling to a dealer but with the banks not lending and the economy in turmoil at present it may be difficult for potential buyers to obtain the cash via a personal loan. Due to this reason, many will buy from a dealer as the dealer can usually arrange finance for the buyer providing that their credit score is not too badly affected. This makes all the difference to making a purchase and I have this first hand myself because last October my bank that I have been with for over 25 years refused to lend me money for a caravan even having 3 previous loans from them and never defaulted. In November last year I approached a dealer in the West Midlands afetr seeing a caravan I wanted who managed to obtain finance for me via Black Horse without any difficulty at all. The problem is that personal loans are deemed as high risk at present due to general cut backs, redundancies and no pay increases etc. whereas the personal finance company can legally repossess the goods if a major default occurs. So to answer your question the safer option at present would may be to request an offer from a local dealer first to see what the offer is but you have to consider how desperate you are to sell. If time is not an issue you could try to sell privately first to generally see if it generates any interest then make your decision say after a couple of months or so.

 excellent advice tango.

on a three year old m/h you are going to take a right bashing off a trader, i would definitely try and sell privately, there's still a lot of money out there for the right stuff, go on what the trader offers you , look in the right press and on ebay , gumtree, on here, anywhere to give you the price you should be hopefully looking for, on your m/h, take some time , the seaon for getting the best price has barely started, dont be over ambitious with your pricing, or like houses etc you wont get a good, quick sale, when you you do eventually decide to sell. good hunting..

Thank you steveiem for your comments.

Regarding selling privately I have never used Gumtree but I did use this site and Preloved which I had more response from when trying to sell my awning. The downside is that you can get a few timewasters and I got fed up with the nitpickers and tyre kickers that I eventually sold it on Ebay with 3 bidders. The couple who bought it did a 300 mile return journey to collect but you can usually tell the genuine buyers from the timewasters. I didn't include the awning with my old caravan part exchange deal because the dealer wouldn't offer any more and because the awning was too good to give away I decided to sell privately. It worked for me but we are only talking about hundreds not thousands which can make a huge difference. Selling on Ebay goes out to a wide audience nationwide which is ideal but you incurr insertion fees and sale costs for advertising with them. That's why I tried UKcampsite and Preloved first but I just needed to sell quickly as I hadn't got room to store my old awning plus my new one.
