If you can give a more accurate idea of your route it will be easier to help with stops. Are you looking for camp sites or places to wild camp. There are parts of loch lomond where camping is going to be banned, due to some anti social behaviour.

Hi John  We are booked on a site at fort william so am thinking of going on our travels in the evening to avoid traffic . going up to glasgow ,then up the A82 passing lomand so thought this would be a good place to wild camp as i hope to be up there around 23:00 .i'm looking for a nice peacefull spot ,But from what i've just read on another forum some parts of lomand are having trouble from a minority . I thought this was gods country ( how gullable am i ? ). i may have to go further up .

There are still some good parts of Loch Lomond you'd be able to stay at without too much problem. To be honest though, I'd recommend the rest and be thankful to spend the evening. Its about 30 minutes drive from Luss, its on your route and the views are nothing less than spectacular. Theres a nice carpark that is very remote you could camp in and you're less likely to come across some of the buckfast brigade that like to frequent Loch Lomond in the summer months.
If you wanted to stay on a site, there's a forest holidays and a C&CC just outside Arrochar.

Hi B, there are several good lay-byes on the lochside as you travel up the A82. Most of the good ones are halfway up or more.

The only Banned Wildcamping Area is on the East Side of the loch and that will not affect you.

I most respectfully suggest that if you are wildcamping anywhere in Scotland, you stay fully dressed, just in case.
If someone does take exception to you being there and calls out the Polis, you can always say that you are tired and you just wanted a wee kip before continuing your drive.

If however you open the door and you are in your Jammies, well they may take it that you had every intention of staying there for some time.

There are plenty of good sites on the internet that will point you in the direction of specific wildcamping places.

Hi TravelTwo... my daughter lives in Altrincham so I've travelled up & down there a few times. It takes about 4 - 4 1/2 hours from Manchester to Glasgow, and I always travel in daylight. If you leave after the morning rush, you can be round Glasgow by 2 ish.

As an alternative, you might consider coming off the M74 round the East side of Glasgow to Stirling, the A84 to Callandar and join the A82 at Crainlarich.

Whatever way, I think around 6-7 hours should do, so it's easily done in a day. It takes me about 8 hours from Turriff.

Again I would say that there's no need to travel in the evening / night to avoid traffic.

If you leave after the morning rush, you can get a good uninterrupted run up the M6. I tend to stop at Tesco, Carlisle - just off the M6 to tank up. Once you're past the Lake District, the traffic tends to thin out and you're fine till you get near Glasgow.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider evening/night driving.

we stay next to loch lomond every time we go up there, there is a lot of scare mongers about, we have never seen or had any trouble there is a large layby, turn into duck bay and there is usally 6-7 motorhomes parked up for the night, or carry on past and there are some carparks you can use, just use some common sense and dont leave any litter etc, and you will be fine.

I live less than 7 miles from that lay-bye at the Duck Bay Marina and would advise you against using it.

Go further north, past Luss, before you stop.
