5yrs is the life of a tyre regardless of wear so replace. As for make, how deep is yer pocket? Premium is best, Michelin, Conti etc, but any commercial van tyre will do the job.
Not according to our local tyre place. I was asking about replacements on an 04, and he told me to bring it in so he could look before i layed money out. Said theres every chance they would be ok, if tread was acceptable. Explain that. As it surprised me.
Its your choice, tyres are not designed to last forever. Doing average mileage the vast majority of tyres are changed in less than 3yrs so age is not a factor. Motorhome tyres can lead an unusual life. They can stand still for months then be driven to Spain in 2 days at motorway speeds.
Theres no actual 'rule' about changing tyres, but it has always been the suggestion that tyres used on caravans/motorhomes should be changed after 5yrs regardless of wear because of the conditions that they are used under.
You can argue about the theory but in practice you regularly hear about tyre failures on motorhomes/caravans but not on other types of vehicles that are used daily & have tyres worn out & changed in under 3yrs so one can conclude that the change after 5yrs suggestion is reasonable.
We don't always agree, but this time Tentz has it right. Don't try to save on the cost of tyres, and remember the tyre doesn't know waht it's carrying. There can't be any difference between a van and a motorhome.
Im not trtying to save money on anything. Im saying a tyre depot - thats been there for 30 years, is suggesting they may be ok. Im guessing they know what they are talking about. And lets not forget, they may not be originals anyway. Ill be surprised if they ok them if im honest. Maybe they are just being honest in not taking the order unnecessarily, unlike some other places i know. Ill report back when i take it down next month.
All the tyre depot can do is look at them, same as you can, if they look ok then they do. This does not mean they are. If they are orginal 7-8yrs old then I'd change them. Its easy to date a tyre if you know how to read the date code(google 'how to date a tyre')& you can find out for yourself if your tyres are orginal or not. I'm suprised the tyre fitter who ok'ed your tyres did not do this, perhaps he did not know how to.
Although tbf, tyre depots often advertise 'free tyre checks' & if the major names advised people to change tyres only half worn they would end up on Watchdog. I don't really think tyre depots understand the specfic needs of motorhomes/caravans. A 'tyre check' means if tread is legal with no obvious sidewall damage then the tyre is 'legal' so ok.
What is not taken into account the long periods standing followed by long distance driving at motorway speeds. Ideally wheels would be removed & stored flat in garage or at least rotated regularly & covered when vehicle is not in use but in practice most motorhomes/caravans are stood without any of this being done.

The tyre fitter hasnt yet laid eyes on the tyres. And when he does, im likely to take his word over a contributor on an internet forum if im honest. Like i say, ill report back WHEN theyve seen them.
He won't be able to see anything, unless the sidewalls are cracked. The problems are internal. That's why it is advised to change them after five years.

If you've got any sense you will take the collective word of everything on the internet(the equivalent of the world's biggest library if you know how to use it)over the word of a random tyre fitter who may just about have the brains to fit & remove tyres. However luckily for you they will want to sell you some tyres, I guess.
