I wonder how many of you have decent driveaway awnings on your M/hs.

I have just had to abort a three day antique fair after just one day as my new Kamper Travelpod proved to be totally useless in what would definitely rank as wind but nowhere near a gale. Still they say you get what you pay for and it was relatively cheap.

Problem is it has two fairly spindly fibregalss poles which make it light but the slightest wind has it bending this way and that and today after a few hours reasonable wind it was succeeding in pulling itself off the Fiamma fixing kit and distorting so much that it kept knocking stuff off the tables I was selling from.

Anyone have a decent set up that is reasonably wind proof ( I realise nothing will stand a hurricane!). Dont mind it being a bit weighty and I have learned my lesson and will pay for something substantial.

Should I go for steel poles and how are the full safari room set ups in wind?

I used to have a Khyam dome tent with the poles all attached which was pretty good, do they do driveaway awnings for motorhomes rather than campers.

Any recommendations appreciated.

regards

John

Yes Khyam do, go forth and pick the appropriate size.  Here is the Excelsior and a click for,  will it fit my motorhome.  They also have the Classic with the link for will it fit.

Oldham,

thanks for the information. wish I had carried out my research properly in the first place!

That certainly looks a lot better than the flimsy thing I have. As I said I used to have a Khyam Ultadome tent in my earlier days and it was always pretty easy to put up with the captive poles etc.

It still looks like it has fibreglass poles but I guess that because it has a number of joints that makes it more rigid and the guying system looks better. How stable do you find it in the wind?

Also any safari room users out there any comments on how resilient they are in windy conditions?

thanks

John

We have a Ventura freestanding awning.
Due to our jobs it is in use 6 to 8 months a year.
It has a steel frame and can withstand a pretty strong wind. Last year it was left freestanding for a couple of days in a blowy spell of weather without any problem at all. I can thoroughly recommend it.

We have a Harrison Drive away awning that we have used just once, it's quite sturdy and cost around £400.  It's up for sale at £150 as we have gone back to a caravan.

We have the Excelsior, and yes it's stable.  Hadn't noticed any fibreglass poles    it's in the caravan at the moment but will be out this weekend I will look and see

Went up and stayed up just like our XXL ridgidome tent so to be honest never noticed

Will report back next week on return
