Hello,I am thinking of converting my van to a camper and have the chance of a caravan at a good price i.e. free! My plan is to use most of the interior of the caravan and fit it into the van.Good idea?Bad idea?Just at the early thinking/dreaming stage just now. Also I was thinking of getting a book called "Travelvans" by John Speed to help me out. Anybody read it? Would you recommend it?Thanks in advance.

Hi Doug

Travel Vans is an excellent book on converting self-building.

Best idea is to decide right I want say: "a colour TV" then post on the forum, this will usually generate a set of different ideas on how to go about it, ie flat screen LCD or Small CRT then how to go about powering it.

Its amazing what you will learn or discover when several people all put idea's and experiences forward.

Then pick what suits you best.First thing that needs clkearing up is what type of camping do you want to do.

On Sites with Hook-up and facilities? (probably not if the 4x4 clue is anytthing to go by)

Then what you want to be able to do in the vehicle

Sleep (how many)
cook (basic to cordon bleu)
Entertainment (Music Lounging reading TV etc)

Have fun and ask away

George

Hi Doug ......... as you look around this site you'll find many who have taken on such a project ...... and have taken photos at every stage ... this is good for you to look back on and we love it (as most of us are nosey lol)

We brought a Renault Master 2 yrs ago ... o/h went into work (a job he had only had 6 months) to brag about our new van ... one of his workmates starting telling him what our van was like on the inside ... it turned out to be the guy that had converted it 6yrs previous (before he joined the company) ... he has since given us some of the photos that he took, and when he finds them, more to follow

I will then copy them and make up a book ... including anything we have done ... to pass on to the next owner

Looking forward to seeing yours
