I'm heading out to the Austrian Alps mid-May. Is it worth taking my winter tyres (and having them wear down some more), or would it be better to put the summer tyres back on and take my snow chains? Are you allowed to drive in Austria without winter tyres?
We're only planning to drive through Austria on the way to Italy.
You should not need winter tyres in may, anywhere in the alps, i have been all over the alps form april onwards and never had nay problems with normal/standard tyres.
They actually remove the snow with ploughs in Austria you know, not like the UK where they spend several days just thinking about it first before the delayed action kicks in. No need for winter tyres, just be glad to get away from morbid Britain and enter a country that knows how to deal with severe weather effectively.
Last may(5-24) we crossed the Alps and St Bernard Pass was closed due to snow. So yes take the chains just in case.
I have them always great for Muddy fields too.
