Have already received some fantastic advise from this forum on buying our first campervan and travelling in Europe, so thougt I would tap into the collective brain again..........
We now have our hearts set on a VW T4 Autosleeper Trident, probably from mid 90's (or very similar hi-top), with the cost of fuel spiralling ever upwards fuel economy is obviously an important consideration (no point in buying a van if we can't afford to feed it)
So what sort of fuel economy in MPGs are we likely to get from this type of vehicle?
Are we better to look at petrol or diesel, my initial thoughts are that a diesel would be more efficient, but I'm sure that seasoned van owners will have their own opinions (are diesel more expensive to buy or repair?)
Hi, well let me tell you of our trident it was almost 8 years ago, and yes it was diesel, we travelled from calais to milano (italy) on almost a tank full, we literally refilled about 45 miles from our stop, ie, camping citta' di milano, ok i never pushed it above the 60 miles an hour mark more like 50/ 55 all the way and no mototrway apart from when we reached almost our destination. We could make it to L'Estartit spain where i'm writing this from on 2 full tanks and spare fuel to run around. So my advice is go for it.
We have a T4 Autosleeper Trooper. Its a 2.5 TDI we've had it almost a year. I've check the mpg regularly & we're getting 40/41 mpg. we've kept the max speed on motorways to around 60-65.

Wow................According to Google Earth and a bit of schoolboy maths I make that just shy of 700 miles on a tank of fuel, How many gallons/litres does the tank hold?
Petrol, 2.0 or 2.5litre will be very thirsty, mid 20s mpg if that. Diesel in all other European countries is considerably cheaper than petrol as it is taxed less. ie France, petrol same price as UK but diesel only £1.15p/litre at moment.
You may find petrol vans for sale much cheaper than same age/condition diesel vans tho which might change things. The 2.5 petrol has plenty of poke & a petrol engine could well have lower repair bills. Some petrol engines may have lpg conversions so even cheaper to run than diesel but lpg tank takes up interior space.

Also, you may not be allowed to use some of the tunnels ie Eurotunnel, if you have LPG as your engine fuel source
The 2.5td VW engine is probably the best you will find in any motorhome in terms of economy.
The information thats been posted is true and you can expect good economy and performance with a nice quiet smooth running motor
I agree, the 2.5 5 cylinder engine is a cracking unit. Just make sure it has had a cambelt change AND a new waterpump. A common failure on a unserviced engine, one seizes and the belt jumps/strips.
My Last T4 was getting around 37mpg.
I've got the heavier T5 california now and you have to drive it very gently to get that figure, it is heavy (2.6 tonnes) and a auto though!!
Our 15year old Trooper is a T4 petrol and a bit more nippy on hills especially, than our old one which was a diesel. It will cost about £90+ to fill the tank we think. We know our main expense for 3 weeks in France will be petrol, but as we only use it as an occasional second car at home (main car Honda Civic, so quite economical) it doesn't bother us unduly. We had our diesel T4 stolen or we would still be in her! Just didn't have time to wait for a diesel T4 to come up before we went off on our holidays 3 years ago. I would still go on the overeall condition of a van before the diesel/petrol debate especially if it's only used occasionally for long trips. Horses for courses I guess!
We have an 18 yr old diesel T4 on an Autosleeper Clubman. We average 26 mpg, but that average is based on motorways (where it's thirsty above 60 mph) and slow back roads where mpg will be well up in the 30s. Our fuel guage doesn't work, so we zero the trip after every fill and look to refuel at 400 miles, as that's how far our tank would take us on the 26 mpg average. I'd say mpg is the least of the factors to take into account, offset against all the fun you'll have.
