We have had our motorhome for 1 year and it is due for a habitation service soon.  We are not sure whether we should have it done, expense; what is serviced; do we really need it etc. We do not use the shower in our motorhome and have never had any damp. It was covered throughout the winter without any problems occuring.

Would like to hear pros and cons please.

Depends how it might affect any warranty in my view. We don't bother with it in our caravan. We don't service our water system or electrics at home. We don't service our cooker at home. We naturally have gas & co2 monitors fitted anyway. Why bother with all this stuff just because its in a caravan/motorhome.

There is no requirement for a habitation service except possibly on individual items to preserve warranty. I've never bothered to have it done. There have been occasional problems that I've had repaired, and I doubt if they would have been picked up at a service.

I'm sure you know if things are working OK and tests for damp are notoriously unreliable.

I would answer as above, but the word safety comes to my mind!!, of course you can have it done a lot cheaper than a motorhome dealer would charge, ie. do you know a corgi registred gas fitter?  one will do the job, get a note from them to say all is ok, and the same applies to electrics side of things, of course the dealer is going to check the body/damp/ security well you know what i mean, they will fill a page of things that will say what they have done and charge you arund £150/170. Its the case of do i or do i not, i had it done once but strongly refused afterwards re. its cost, there is no way on earth that a habitation check should cost almost £200.  Mine now are done by one of my son's and a friend, checked with my insurance and the answer was  there was no problem as long the operators concerned are qualified, which they both are.

...yeah,I'd just echo what has already been said...if there are no warranty requirements, well you know if it's all working or not, just fit gas/C02 alarms and maybe a gaslow gauge(...which also acts as a leak detector)...and importantly make sure that you thoroughly clean and check the roof a couple of times a year, making sure that any seals/mastic is still intact..

hab service £115 plus vat £138 X ten years £1380

ten years down the line you want to sell,

if you have all the correct paperwork = private buyer rather than low trade in value....

I think you have to look at the bigger picture

If you were selling, then yes, perhaps get a hab' service done(..in a similar way as you'd MOT a car prior to selling)..

But a buyer isn't going to be bothered that it hasn't had 10 years of consecutive hab's services done..only that it's covered by a current  service..

do not bother having it done, give things a check each time you use them. One thing to look at is the date stamped on the gas pipe, this usually only lasts for a few years before it is recomended to replace it.

Warranty is covered for he first year, and longer due to your consumer rights. you do not get you fridge or tv or cooker etc at home serviced every year - why do it on your MH
