Sorry I'm sure this has come up loads and I've read the seat belt thread but just wanted a bit of advice. We are hoping to buy a motorhome and have looked at all different ones. We've seen a Elddis Trafic Eclipse with side facing seats in the rear lounge. I've spoken to a seat belt company who have said they can fit lap belts. What is everyone's opinion on how safe these are? We have a 13 year old child but could arrange it that he sat in the front passenger seat and I sat in the back. Do you think this is an option or is it silly to even consider buying a motorhome with only lap belts?

Any advice would be appreciated

Not safe to have side facing lap belts. Also I think it would be quite difficult/ uncomfortable travelling sideways.

Keep looking, there are plenty of vans with 3 forward facing belted seats.

Seems from what I have read on forums, that you are better off with no belts, rather than lapbelts on side facing sofas. It is to do with the injuries you may suffer in an accident, when wearing a lapbelt.

The problem with retro fitting belts is not only the costs, but also the safety aspect, a lot of companys is won`t touch fitting belts , because of the legal nightmare , if they fail in an accident. Apparently it is a bit complex retro fitting belts, it not just bolting to chassis

You are much better off finding a van with a proper seatbelt.

Lap straps or seat belts on side facing seats are not not safe as in the event of an accident, I understand, they are more dangerous than nothong at all.  There are plenty of motorhomes with five or six legal seatbelts, ours has 4 forward facing seats with proper seatbelts, one rear facing with proper seatblet and one rear facing with lap strap;  all were factory fitted.  Personally I prefer to compromise on lay out than safety.
