OK, I apologise if this message makes everyone chuckle at the ridiculousness (is this a word?)! My husband and I are thinking of selling our house and taking our children round the world for a year. As our children are still very young 4 & 1.5, one option we are considering is buying a motorhome and doing it this way. I thought I would ask the experts (you) if you think this is possible. We couldn't really afford a brand new one (I never realised they were so expensive!) so it would have to be used. What are good, very reliable makes, what kind of insurance would we need, what other logistics, etc etc. Does this seem ridiculous?
I'd really appreciate any thoughts you have on this. Many thanks. Nicolette
Just do it but spend a fair bit on the motor home if you can and as long as you always have a good international recovery service you cant really go wrong..
The French and Germans do this sort if thing all the time so why wait
Not sure whats a good motorhome make really but Winnebego's seem popular or Hymers..
It would be a bit rushed. We have just come back from travelling around Europe for six months and that sometimes seemed rushed. You will also have problems getting insurance for any trip longer than six months and outside the EC you will need to investigate each countries rules seperately before you head off. Shipping of the motorhome, if you really are going to go all the way round will also cost you sum. As for the motorhome itself, its age is not always a guide to things as we have a 1990 Talbot Express, Autohomes Highwayman conversion and it never broke down once. They are cheap, too, at least as far as motorhomes go and you should be able to pick one up for around 6-8000 pounds. Also make sure you have the right layout as many of these vans have differing layouts some of which are not suitable for travelling with children as they are not safe sitting sideways on. But go for it......maybe scale it down or add some time to the trip but go for it.........
Do a search for trips along the 'Silk Route' in the Far East. You will find a lot of comments from people who have done this before. One of the comments I remember was about the make of vehicle. Some countries don't allow certain makes of vehicle on their soil (Fords in Iran for instance). Also there are vehicles that are more common than others throughout the world and this will reflect in the parts availability.
