Many thanks for all of your very helpful replies!
I managed to turn the main circular housing to the open position (obvioulsy the previous owners hadn't been too hot on lubricating it!), and found that the blade had actually sheared off and was in the bottom of the tank.
I cleaned it up a bit (it was a bit pongy!) and tried to put it back together - but then contacted one of our local suppliers who managed to find a complete mechanism for £39.
So I've decided to go for that - at least we'll have a nice clean, fresh-smelling unit now!
