We're planning a winter in our motorhome on a campsite in Spain. One price quote includes for free electric with usage of up to "6 kilowatt per day". Has anyone experienced this and how far does 6 kw per day go? Is it a generous allowance or a stingy one? Would we be able to make normal use our 400w halogen heater in the evenings, 500w single hob for cooking, 1500w kettle and usual ancillaries e.g. fridge, freezer, TV, lights etc without exceeding 6 kw per day? I think that once you've exceeded your 6kw daily quota, you have to pay for the excess.
Another campsite has quoted electric supply as "up to 90kw/ month free) kw extra 0.30€"
The first site which is quoting 6 Kw per day (which would work out at 180 Kw per month?) didn't mention what the charge is for excess usage, so must check up on that.
The second site which quotes 90 Kw per month (which I guess works out at only 3Kw per day!) will charge an excess of 30cents per Kw. Beginning to sound expensive...
2.5hrs of 400w halogen heater (in Spain???): = 1kWh
2 hrs of 500W single hob: = 1kWh
6hrs of 80W television:= 0.5kwh
0.5hrs of 1500w kettle:= 0.75kwh
Fridge/freezer about 50% of 24 x 100W = 1.2kwh
This totals 4.45kWh & leaves you with just over 1.5kWh for lighting and anything else.
In my Burstner, I have 10W tungsten halogen lights all over the place. If I had say half a dozen on for 6 hrs a day (I don't use anything like that much) then I'd use about 6 x 6 x 0.01 = 0.36 kwh.
I reckon 6 kwh is a very reasonable allowance for a holiday in the middle of summer. In the UK, in spring, say Easter, you could use a LOT more than that. If you used 2kW of electric heating for an average of say 12hrs per day, you would use 24kWh.
If your caravan had its own electricity supply from the local electricity company and you used an average of about 6kWh per day, your annual bill would be a tad short of £300 - i.e. under £1 per day. That puts into context the £3/day most caravan sites in the UK charge even in summer, doesn't it?
Thank you so much everyone for your input on this.
Andrew's reply helped to put things into perspective. Halogen heater in Spain(?) - lots of people have warned us that, once the sun has set, winter nights in Spain can be chilly enough to need some form of heating. In the UK we use a halogen heater with 2 x 400w elements, but one 400w element is usually enough in the motorhome, even in the depths of an arctic English winter. So all in all, it's looking like we should manage to stay "out of the red" as long as we're careful.
Cheers, best wishes and happy motorhoming to you all.
We found our fridge used 4kw of electricity in a 24 hour cycle while at La Manga and the daily limit was 6kw inclusive so it was very easy to go over the limit .
We ended up running the fridge on gas using a Spanish 11kg bottle which was on €13 for a refill cheap compared to UK calor prices
Is your fridge one of the new generation tall fridge/freezer type? The one in our motorhome is the basic Dometic small, under-the-counter type with very small freezer compartment. We were thinking of taking a small table-top freezer as well - maybe not such a good idea(?!)
my compressor fridge is only 12v and can go down to -20 in the freezer section, and -5 in the fridgemay stick it on now to see how it performs in 25 degrees...

No just the standard under the counter type Dometic fridge fitted to most mid range caravans , with a average size freezer compartment .
We found it difficult to keep to 6kw per day while at la Manga when running all electric but on gas it was easy to keep to your quota
