I desperately would like to buy a new camper van with all mod cons including shower & loo to sleep four
I have never driven one and as a 66 yr old female am I too old to give it a go?
My aim is to take my dog and grandkids on weekend trips in Uk and eventually drive to the south Spain( travelled as car passenger many times)
That said I haven't a clue as to make/model or reliability of these vehicles, I do know it will need to be diesel and automatic
I think the smaller & more compact the better as something huge will certainly deter me and I want to feel confident not nervous
Basically what I'm asking here is a big HELP

if you don't mind making up a bed every night you could look at either a mazda bongo or a toyota granvia. These are both a small vw sized camper but are diesel powered and, i think are automatic. As a 60 year old couple sitting in Spain at the moment we think you should go and do it and enjoy yourself.

to drive to Spain you need a fair old tool with a decent engine and box, so whats your budget?

You'll need forward facing seats in the back if your taking children. Just something to remember when your looking.

Diesel and automatic will be a limiting factor.

Mercedes base with a sprintshift gearbox. (Expensive)

Fiat Ducato base will need a 3litre diesel and comformatic gearbox. The 2.3 litre fiats (peugeots and citroens) don't have an auto option.

Renault master base, not many about but do have autos.

VW - but not cheap but good to drive
Fiat - crap dealers
beds - are you ok with roof beds?? for the grandchildren,
as already said - you should look for forward facing seats and proper belts for the kids,

have you managed to visit any dealers or shows, you realyy need to see, examine and test drive before you try to identify your requirement

Really appreciate everyone's input .. Think I am maybe wanting too much in my spec..
Probably will try one out as my son has a basic vw 2 berth, which I really like..
Trouble is I do have a hang up about shower & loo plus it is essential that its a diesel automatic

What is the budget ?

And how old/big are the grandchildren?

A lot of smaller 4 berths have roof beds for the kids, our old van had these but the max weight was only 50kg, so OK for younger kids but no use for growing teens.

As for Automatic and diesel , there seem to be either bongo type vans with a similar layout to your sons VW, but with no toilet/shower, or bigger motorhomes and also a bigger price tag. Autotrader.co.uk allows you limit a search to autos and deisels etc.

we've downsized over the years, from A class to present SWB VW - the loo is handy, but to be honest only ever really used shower 'room' as extra storage and it is REALLY handy as a place to hang wet gear out of the way and with ventilation.
everything is a trade, and we've opted for easy driving and parking and traded posh loo for a porta potti
suits us
do agree about diesel automatic though, hence our choice of VW, the DSG box is brilliant
good hunting
