Hi everyone,

I've been using this site to find touring parks and then I've been emiling the parks to find out if they accept self build motorhomes and have found that a rather large number do not and most either don't really have much of a reason or won't give me one. Can anyone help with maybe a comprehensive list or site that shows parks that accept us poor relations? It never occurred to me when we bought our partially converted van that we would then be discriminated against for not being able to afford a purpose built motorhome.

I'd agree with Jonnyd',the likes of the Caravan Club may be a bit funny about it(..and would probably want to see photos before you joined anyway).

..but as long as it looks like a camper(..and is reasonably tidy),you shouldn't have much of a problem finding sites that'll accept you...

(..however, I'm assuming that by "partially converted",you don't just mean it's got a mattress and a bucket in the back..?  ...  as I would guess that any vehicle used on sites, would have to be actually registered with dvla as a camper(motorcaravan?) ..

We use the Isle of Avalon at Glastonbury(..not as "hippy" as it sounds )and they have selfbuilds on there..

Thanks guys for your very prompt replies. It does still look much like a van at the moment although the other half says he's going to do something with the paintwork this spring. It's also not registered as a motorhome as we heard you need to have the gas and electric certified and that this is quite expensive.

I've just clicked on that website, pepe63, and ours is almost identical to the white one in the picture on the home page. The only difference is that our side windows are towards the rear.

We only bought it last summer and the very first site I tried to book online had a form that listed all the purpose built makes and you had to pick one to be able to move on so I had to phone instead. We do stay there for overnight breaks as it's not too far to go but are not allowed during July and August! So many sites I've looked at specifically say no Commercial Vehicles...........sometimes in BIG BOLD CAPITAL LETTERS!!!!!

Just try and make it look like a camper mine only has 1 window and a big roof window, but the following make it look more camperish

I shouldn't worry too much about that "rule",it's not aimed at "campervans" as such...it's really referring to commercial van being used as tow vehicles etc(..it's really a sort of "anti-traveller" measure,as much as anything).

To be honest,if the site(s) you've looked at so far, have had websites that require you to enter your vehicle make/model,then you're probably looking at the wrong sites...(..we haven't come across that,except for when using a "Club" site)

There are plenty of casual,easy going sites about...and I dare say the sbmcc site/forum will have some lists/recommendations...
