Can anyone please tell me If I buy a new Motorhome from a dealer at a considerable distance from my home would I have to return the vehicle to the same dealer for servicing?

Thanks

Many dealers insist, it's in the small print, that you return for habitation checks to comply with the guarantee conditions.

The base vehicle can be serviced at any FIAT (or whatever) official dealer.

It's not the servicing that is the main problem, the warranty is the issue. If you have a problem and need a warranty repair you will likely come across a problem going anywhere but the people that sold you it.

There are letters in magazines and forums about this all the time, mainly from people who have bought at one of the shows e.g. Manchester show and the dealer told them one thing to get a sale.

Stay local if possible, it adds up to travel for warranty jobs.

I have had a few warranty jobs done, I bought from my local CI dealer, still 70 miles away.

I take the MH (70 miles), the wife takes the car to bring me back (140 miles for the car round trip)

A couple of weeks later the car covers the 140 miles again round trip to pickup and the MH does another 70 to get it home.

Machanically, I have my servicing and MOT's done locally as the warranty is now run out. Habitation service has not yet been done but there are mobile people that I have been researching to use. Everything works and I'm not drowning from leaks so I keep putting it off.

as blongs says it pays to buy as local as you can .try and get a local dealer to match the price of the one that is miles away.warantee is nearly always by the supplying dealer .

i have bought two new vans both local 30 and 45 miles away and lost count of number of times had to go back .my last dealer will give me a loan car if they want to keep the van for over a day .they ask you to be there for 8 am give you a free breakfast read of paper and noon van ready .

If i was having to take a van back for work/problems every two minutes id reject it and want my money back.

My warranty runs out next week. Shame the company 'run out' before Christmas!

I think once you are out of warranty, you are best getting the van bit serviced locally, then using a mobile guy for the hab side. Saves a return trip, and is usually cheaper.

I think you are being mislead somewhat, i purchased a hobby from a dealer in Lincoln, i'm not mentioning names, but before i signed  on the dotted  line and handed the cash over, i made a deal with them ie. how would they deal with warranty work with me being so far away  (Liverpool) The answer i got, they were prepared to pay for any work to be carried out under warranty at any leading dealership of my choice here in Lancs, i was rather happy with that, and one job did come up ie. winding mechanism of the sky light, and the whole item was replaced by Hymer UK in Preston.  So the morale here is before you hand over the cash make a deal, and get it in writing, good luck

That reminds me. My van had 2 'problems' soon after i got it. Firstly, the rear brakes were binding. I refused to drive the 60 miles to the dealers, as i didnt know if they were going to lock up half way. Secondly, i found the van battery hadnt been swapped as promised, and refused point blank to take it back just for a new battery. Both times they agreed to let me get it sorted locally, and they picked up the tab.

You can use any unroadworthy-ness 'problem' to get the work done locally - wheels, tyres, steering, clutch, lights etc etc. citing you arent convinced itll do the 30/50/70 odd miles to get it to them. Or you are scared of the police pulling you. They arent going to argue, or it'd cause them more problems than its worth.

Thanks for the replies, a lot to take in, glad I asked the question as the dealer is over 100 miles away. Looks like I have a choiceI. Either get it in writing that I can get any work done under warranty by a leading dealership closer to home or buy closer to home.

Tell any potential seller that having warranty work done locally is integral to the deal - BEFORE pound notes are parted with or owt signed. They need your sale more than you need their particular van!

Good luck. Let us know how you go on.

We found it didn't make any difference any warranty jobs would tend to have to be done mid week which would involve a day off.
We live in Manchester but bought in Gloucestshire any warranty work we had booked for a Friday or Monday and made a trip of it staying over.
It wouldn't worry us where we buy in the future.
The base vehicle servicing is more important to us do have a look round and see what vehicles can be serviced nearby. We had 2 or 3 lots of base vehicle warranty issues and 2 conversion problems one being the well, known gas hose pipe issues on the Duetto which took so little time anyway.

I understand the warranty on the motorhome and habitation  sides, but "vehicle" servicing needs to be done at a main dealer e.g. Ford for the vehicle warranty to remain effective doesn't it? Most motorhome suppliers aren't main dealers for a vehicle make, only the builder/ converter.

Nah.....they only have to use approved parts whoever does it. Dealer-only is long gone unless its specified in the terms. In which case its a scam between the two, and would have me walking away.

''my van is three years  old soon and will be out if warantee ''

We have just paid nearly £500 to buy three extra years warranty on our three year old motorhome.I know it appears to be a lot but we now have piece of mind for the next few years and if we decide to sell our motorhome the warranty is transferable. A good selling point maybe.
