I did what you are thinking a number of years ago, and toured most of California and nevada, visiting national parks and the popular citys, it was really great.
What I would suggest would be to book a package which would include flights, first night in hotel ( jet lag) van hire, and last night in hotel before flight home.
I did find the driving relaxing but as regards wild camping, forget it, use the campsites. The cost for sites sometimes worked out dearer than a nights stay at motels, and if I ever did it again I think I would go for flydrive and booked motels in advance.
You could try looking at Virgin Calafornia USA brochure for info.
I think you will find the visit fantastic, but pricey. Good Luck
