I'd just like to say we bought ours last May and have only been home for about 3 weekends since having it.

We love it. Most of the time there's just the two of us but we take our dog and our teenage daughter and she loves it. Oh and sometimes we go away with friends and theres loads of room.

No onboard loo but that i'm glad about! who wants to clean a toilet out everyday - not my thing.

The design is great and we have loads of fun and get lots of exercise too.

Just thought I'd share that :)

We have a similar 'van, and we love ours too! Had it 18 months now, it's been to France 3 times, and last summer we went away for a number of short breaks, great for visiting family. Next trip to France straight after Easter.

We have a 10 year old LHD one and it is absolutely fantastic, small enough to use as a car, big enough to live in.

The inlaws have one of these Californias and love it. I personally cant see the attraction and would find it too restrictive. You'd have to find a site with facilities - unless you are happy to 'do it in the woods' in a howling gale etc. or walked about festering because you hadnt washed for three days. Theres no hot water to wash up, and nowhere to stand up. And all for only 35K. The inlaws get around the loo bit with a toilet tent and porta potti. Not for me, im afraid. Its obviously horses for courses.

And all for only 35K.

Nowadays try £42k up to over £50k for fully loaded. The best VW Calif. was the T3 in late 80s...the ones with the engines in the front are builder's vans.

It's a handy van for us, use it for when we both need transport at once or for picking stuff up at B&Q.

OH uses it for rallies, can get all his stuff in it.

We converted from a tent, and like campsite life, so not having loo and shower isn't a problem, besides, what's wrong with woods?

I think it works best for ex-tenters who like campsites and are happy to use the facilities, the reward is then a small manouverable van.

Big motorhomes tend to suit ex-caravanners or people who haven't previously camped that like to have their creature comforts with them..

Absolutely horses for courses.

As you say, horses for courses.

Most campsites have a toilet and often a shower even if they are basic.

I think it's fair to say that many owners of caravans and motorhomes will use campsite facilities in preference to their on board ones - so they wouldn't really miss them.

Anyway, I think I might prefer "in the woods" or Tesco (other big supermarkets with toilet facilities are available) than in a plastic tank in the van!

No hot water - but they have a kettle and a stove, surely? Why stay unwashed for 3 days when there is a sink and the previously mentioned heated in a kettle warm water to wash in?

I do agree that I need room to stand up, though.
