If diesel at todays prices costs £500 for, say a 2000mile round trip it means fuel costs have gone up £250 from a few yrs ago when diesel was half the cost that it is now. If anybody can't easily afford that extra £250 then it would mean they can barely afford to run a motorhome anyway.
For the vast majority of motorhome owners that extra £250 will be easily afforded which would suggests that the rise in diesel cost is not that much of an issue.
We probably get more miles to the gallon out the motorhone than we did towing our caravan with our car. Yes it was a sizeable caravan and we have to have a people carrier to accomodate our family but still would cost as much if not more to take the caravan to southern europe than it would the motorhome.

The original question was "do you think the current price of fuel will affect the rise in popularity of motor homing?"
At what point did that turn to the old chestnut of motorhome versus caravan. Surely we are all like minded people anyway
Also I am none too keen on being told what I can or cannot afford to run just because I don't like being ripped off with the fuel.
I think what you are really sensing tents. Is that people don't like being talked down to

Is it a good idea to stop now maybe?
Completely agree Josiewales.
Mine is now full of diesel thanks to 15p off per litre at morrisons offer last week.
Happy Motorhoming.

The MH is 11 years old now (but still mint) so we were thinking of changing this year to maybe one 4 or 5 years old (don't like build quality or hi tec problems with brand new ones, or looks for that matter)
Thing is what with the ridiculous price of diesel, is it really worth the outlay of upgrading when trips of more than a couple of hundred miles cost an arm and a leg?
Surely I am not alone in this and I wonder if the spiralling cost of fuel might slow the big increase in motorhome and caravan sales.
When we first started M/Homing the cost of the fuel was hardly even a consideration, and that isn't too long ago
Josiewales,
I'm a tenter. I think there will continue to be a market for m/homes but manufacturers may find themselves having to source more fuel efficient engines and look at lighter weight materials to keep up (and indeed may well be forced to do the former by legislation). However that will up the purchase price for a motorhome and it might make folks think.
The diesel issue imho is going to depend very much on the individual's budget; most of us are having to cut back and many may have mortgage/job worries, so maybe looking at staying closer to home rather than take long trips. That is going to be good for some areas and very lean for others. I think it'll put some m/homers off, especially those that like wandering around to remote places, but not others.
I would ask the motorhome producers where are the really economical engines which we can now find in some manufacturer's vehicles? Where is the use of lighter materials? ( the older Sprite Musketeers were much much lighter than todays caravans! and the same could apply to motorhome via furniture, bed frames etc etc.) Frontal area is critical so keep it low profile. For goodness it's not rocket science. I could design better myself. Perhaps I will......................................

From Scotsbob, We have a 2:2 lt Peugeot Elddis Sunseeker, and have just come back from nearly 3 weeks away travelling from Aberdeen to W Sussex and back. Covered 1297 mls averaged 33.7 mls to the gallon. Dearest diesel bought was at 154.9 lt at a m/way services - only put in enough to get me up to 1/2 tank till we got to a supermarket for lower price, although prices in places were roundabout 1.41 -1.43 lt. As ur van is 11 yrs and still in good nick and running well why change it for something you dont know the history of " better the devil you know than the devil you dont."
Or use veg Oil. Bunged 20 litres of Cash & carry finest into my tank yesterday at £1 a litre and she's purring.
Im now seriously considering going the whole hog with a 2 tank system for next winter

I have an Auto trail Pullman , I bought it new in 1991. I use it everyday to commute to work as after the cost of insurance etc for a car it's not worth another vehicle and keeping running the Talbot is better for it apart from I love driving it.
I must have missed the first 11 year itch but I am now coming up to the second.
Will I change it? NO WAY, 21 years and still going strong. It's getting dearer to run but how convenient is a car to just hop into for a short trip to waste fuel? when a bike will do.
