We are currently looking at buying a new people carrier vehicle, to replace our aging Ford Galaxy.  There are six of us and two labrador dogs, so space is our main priority.  Also, we tow a caravan so we need it to be more than 2 litre engine.

Anyway, I was just thinking today that my dream would be a people carrier that could somehow double as a motorhome for two of us to sneak off in for weekends alone. 

I have happy memories as a kid of eight people frequently driving about the countryside in my parents' friends v-dub.  Mind you, that was pre- seatbelt legislation!

Any suggestions, other than "dream on"?!

I would also suggest looking at a Toyota Granvia. Mine was originally a 7-seater (you can get 8-seater versions) but was adapted (rather than converted) to carry two dogs by taking the back seats out and building a storage area with dog bed and wrap-around dog guard. I turn the centre into a double bed and use a drive-away awning as my living space if I'm staying anywhere for any length of time. It's automatic and is an absolute dream to drive, has a 3 litre turbo diesel engine so more than capable of towing a caravan. Not really a commuter car as it's thirsty on juice on short runs, but not bad on a long run at 60-65mph.

It depends on your budget. You can get VWs today that do the same as the one you mention & have seatbelts. If you can find a T4 or T5 Multivan people carrier then they have rear seats that fold flat into a bed.

would dfo say go with a T4 or a bongo...
most people carriers (as with the galaxy) have rubbih size boots. the T4 has a fantastic boot. we have put our lrge dog in one of the solid beds and syill had room for shopping plus space!!
i know hnow you feel ... we were lookig for the same thing but there were 7 of us.. we gave up!
have you thought of crew vans/mess vans. they are dirt cheap and can be utilised!!

our granvia has 3 seat bench seat across the back (2 full seatbelts and 1 lapbelt). kitchen conversion down drivers side (incl. fridge, 2 ring gas hob and sink). captains seat in middle passenger side (this drops flat as does the back seat and then there is an infill cushion to make up the double bed).Then obviously the 2 normal front seats. We find it very comfortable and as Tigermouse says lovely to drive. We have the 3.4L petrol version with LPG conversion which is quite thirsty but does everything we need it to do without any hassle including now towing our newly acquired caravan.

Thank you everyone.  I have really enjoyed looking into this and considering all the options - a whole cool new world out there I didn't know about! 

I suspect the best we could do financially at the moment is buy a vehicle (like a Caravelle or somesuch) that we could have converted in the future.
