Our motorhome is covered in the winter and we hook up and use the onboard charger to keep the cab battery charged.  The problem we have just had, is that the battery dried out - would you take the battery out when stored or leave a trickle feed into it using a solar panel.

If you are not using van over winter for months then you need to disconnect both van battery & leisure battery & trickle charge once a month. If you don't you will shorten life of batteries. Alternatively rather than disconnect batteries take van for a run 20miles or so every 3wks if you can then you won't have to charge anything.

I don't think the onboard charger is really meant for continuous charging - you need an intelligent charger like the ones Aldi and Lidl do, fairly regularly, for £12.99. Or you can lash out on a CTek.

Yeah it's ok to take battery out but you should at least take her for a good run at least once or twice so that you can give the tyre's a good run and just the warm the engine up plus get the fuel etc running through engine.

Take care if you remove the batteries from your motorhome over the winter months.

I guess that, like me, you are confined to a storage facility withoout available power?

Dont forget that if you remove the power to you vehicle (engine) system then all the codes in the electrics will disappear. You will need to have the radio code and the codes for anything else (i.e alarm, immobiliser etc) available for the re-boot!

Leisure batteries are generally easier to remove and replace as they usually run nothing if they are isolated at the control box. The Ctec trickle charger would be fine for keeping this up to par on your bench at home.

The suggestion to add a small solar panel is good (provided that someone does not remove it for you.) I have seen them fitted between the inside windscreen blinds and the glass which seemed a good idea to keep them safe and makes the wiring easier.

I ended up driving around for 30 minutes once a fortnight to keep all my 'lectrics working. Figured this prevented any flat spots in my tyres, got the engine and oil up to temp and got me out of the Sunday morning chores at home.
