if i sold our caravan in part ex and bought a motorhome, what is the position as regards towing a small car when we go away,we need to get a decent 4 berth with a bit of room, don't mind sleeping in a cab double over,so long as it has room to sit and eat and relax in,plus toilet etc.needs to be easy for oh to drive as well.
If you feel you must have a car behind a Motorhome is there really any advantage over a car and caravan .
motorhomes are meant for touring so if walking or cycling is not your thing and you cant be without a car is a motorhome the right leisure vehicle for you ?.
Also the legality of A-frames comes into question as its a grey area and the only way to be 100% legal is to tow a car trailer

Trying to get a motorhome through some towns can be a nightmare. You would no more try to tow your Lunar/Honda outfit through some places than I would. Also for touring around once you get to your destination it's that much easier.

Years ago , we towed a Suzuki behind our 5 berth motorhome. Only in the UK and never had a problem. We checked for insurance cover too.
Why do this ? We liked to use the motorhome not just for main holidays but for odd days out.Loads of 'em........... In my opinion a motorhome is far better for these "day trips". Also with 2 children (back then ) and kit ,having a car makes for a quick getaway onsite for trips to the sea etc etc.
The car once came in very handy when we had a real emergency ( family member Helicoptered to hospital following accident) . A rare incident , I know, but towing a car suits some peoples' lifestyle at certain stages of life
We now caravan and take bikes but "day vanning" is missed still.
------------- cramming for my finals in the twilight zone

What advantage is there over a caravan/car combination ?
very little apart from being able to use a Motorhome for odd days out but if your away for extended period and staying put in the same location a Motorhome and car has no benefit whatsoever
As you say the Europeans are more Motorhome friendly so the need for a car is less as in France there are Aire for Motorhomes often close to town centers which means you can walk or cycle to explore the area or for food shopping .
To be legal you need a car and and car trailer then you have the added disadvantage of where to store a trailer as many site's abroad have pitches with limited space .
The only reason that I swapped from a caravan to a motorhome was so that I could take my Caterham 7 with us on holiday. If at anytime I part with the Caterham I am sure that I would go back to a caravan. Furthermore a motorhome is another vehicle that requires taxing, insuring, etc.
I tow the Caterham on a trailer which I can reverse with no problem. I am sure it would be more difficult reversing with a car on an A-frame!!
followed up for info on towing a car behind a motorhome.
both vosa and dvla and police have been very helpful forthcoming with the regs and limitations as to this matter.
outcome is to letter of law ,a car can be towed, but it must be on a trailer, braked, and fully working lights with reg.plate of towing vehicle clearly displayed, also the reg.plate of vehicle on the trailer must !!! be hidden.also max gross weights must be within the limitations of the towing vehicle.

there are two advantages for us:our main car,the one we use for day to day is small if we towed a caravan we would need a big car,not realy practical for the rest of the year,
a motormome suits us because for w/ends and short breaks we dont tow the car but on our two week break we do
