Sorry to be a little negative Basa but ya can't beat a good old atlas (map). I have found in the past sat nav's put you in some compromising places

Have to agree with the above. I got a satnav a few years ago but got rid of it as it was worse than useless, but my trusty map book has never let me down yet.

Well i must disagree with both replies above, any sat nav all it is, is an atlas, and if in the right hands it will do the job that it was meant to do, the same applies to a PC, its the people using it that will gain the benefits it offers, ie. some people are brilliant at using them some obviously are not, i would say am in the middle, and have been using one since the day they came out, i own a tomtom xxl and personally i think its one of the best on the market, although memory wise is not as big as my previous one ie.tomtom go 910 but it has taken me to Italy.France/Spain a short  trip to Germany without a hitch,  its as you say in England a tool is as good as the bloke that uses it.And now there is so much stuff that you can download for free from their web site, ie, campsites here and abroad plus aires again all over europe and all for free.

I posed a similar question back in February as my Tom Tom dropped from windscreen fixing...and Broke...well I asked which , as mine was now defucnt and Old...(a TOMTOM GO710)...but it had never let me down, and never answered me back.It had taken me thousands of miles...... back to which...Snooper or new TOM TOM.  Had loads of replies...but was fortunate enough to have a brother in law in T>V repair business, and a gadjit wizzard. He repaired Thomas....and I have never had a probem with it since....the wife uses it in car, and I in the VAN.  AM SO PLEASED IT WAS GIVEN THE KISS OF LIFE. I saved a buch of dosh, and have a very precise and easily used satnav.  Its foolproof...and like I say...she uses it in car!

In the car is ok as if it takes you up an old farm track you can turn around . In a 21 ft motorhome or car with a caravan may poes problems . go back to basics M.A.P . Sat navs are great along the way as to find i.e nearest petrol st/n or shopping . or god for be it hospital .. basa nothing wrong with consulting the map before you go .

We use a sat nav in conjunction with a map and this works well for us. would not feel happy using the sat nav alone as it has taken us down a dirt track in the car, hate to think what would happen in a motorhome!!  We have 2 sat navs, one is now out of date, and it is quite noticeable that they give us different routes.

We also use a tomtom sat nav best thing since sliced bread, we go to France for our holidays put in the co-ordinates for a particular aire, set no tolls, no motorways and drive there at our leisure.

I don't wish to start an argument but tbh I resent the inference that I'm somewhat lacking in the brain department when it comes to using a satnav. The one I got was bought for its supposed simplicity and ease of use and I followed the instructions to the letter when setting it up initially, but it had a fault which meant that all the directions were the opposite of what they should have been - left instead of right etc. My now-ex reset it but it was just the same, and had we taken notice of it on one occasion we would have gone the wrong way down the M61 - not a good idea! It couldn't even navigate us home from my mum's house which is less than two miles away!

I sent it back and got a replacement which worked fine (thereby proving that it wasn't my inability to use it and both of us couldn't be wrong) but by then I'd lost confidence in the whole idea of having one, so it was boxed up and I reverted to using a map book. I later sold the satnav to my dil's dad and he was quite happy with it. Horses for courses I suppose, and while I'm still perfectly capable of reading a map book and asking someone for directions if necessary (which is very rare) I will never have another satnav. After all, we all had to use our brains before they were invented!

I use my android phone, with google nav, I simply put in where Im going, then use the preview route function to check the map, I can then fine tune the route by simply dragging the route line to where I want it, hey presto a custom route that is exactly the same as if I were using just a map.
I frequently use it this way, especially with C&CC sites, as they say to use their instructions for arrival, other routes may not be suitable.
the other advantage is the street view, you can actually go LOOK at the road, which gives you a better idea of suitability, something that no map could do.
