Hi,
I'm currently with the AA for breakdown services and although they've been good, they only recover you in one direction - ie they will take you either to your campsite or back home, but not both if they can't repair your van.

I'm sure somewhere I've heard of breakdown recovery which would allow you to continue your holiday, taking you your camp and then fetching you home afterwards - a good insurance for anyone driving an old van like mine.

Does anyone know who offers this - or have I just imagined it? Any recommendations would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

If you break down on the way there they will transport you to your campsite. If you stay there for a week or whatever you can then ring them & say you are broke down & they should transport you home. They won't know you have not fixed the van during your hol or not.

Unfortunately they are wise to that one, if they took me to a campsite on Friday because of, say a failed clutch, they wouldn't pick me up from the same site on the Sunday with the same failed clutch (I did ask ;-) ).

The other option of course is to have a second breakdown cover with another supplier so there's always one-in and one-out as a contingency, but I'm sure I read of the there-and-back policy somewhere.

The ones from the Caravan Club and the C&CC do the 2 recovery facility.

C&CC Arrival

Arrival

Arrival Return – taking you to your pre-booked UK campsite and back home again if your vehicle cannot be repaired (when Recovery has been taken as a membership option)

Ive just taken AA recovery, and theyll pay for overnight accommodation till the vans fixed, then im on my way again. If the van was to be really broken, id want to be going home there and then, personally. I couldnt be jollying away somewhere knowing the van was knackered 100's of miles away.

We've just dropped our AA breakdown "membership", after being with them for over twenty years...

We found that their renewal premiums were getting ridiculously high..and when they were unwilling to match the prices that THEY were offering other folk online(for the same cover etc),we told 'em to stick it..!

We've now got  far better, all singing and dancing cover from Greenflag(inc' "Dual recovery"),through the CC,for around 60 odd quid...and that's less than half what the AA were asking us for...

Edit: Sorry Off the main topic ..but I've just remembered another reason we dropped the AA..

The OH had her car insured with/through them..and when the renewal came through last autumn,on searching the online comparison sites,it was 100-150quid+ higher than other major companies(Churchill,Admiral etc),for the same type of cover.Even their own online quotes that came up were a lot cheaper(again, for the same cover/features).

One AA quote, even included 12 months FREE breakdown cover!..but when we contacted them about it,bizarrely they said that WE would only get the 4 months because that would take us to when our existing breakdown cover was due for renewal(..so in effect, they'd be "doubling up" the cover for those 4 months)..and they knew we'd be unlikely to renew our breakdown cover,if they'd already included cover with the car insurance!...

Hence,I told 'em to shove it!

Unfortunately with an old VW they've rarely been able to fix the van when called out but at least if I'm guaranteed to get to the campsite, I can still stay in the van until the end of the holiday then get them to collect me afterwards - not spoiling the holiday.

I'll check out the other options mentioned on the thread - thanks everyone!

I've just taken out the RAC "Arrival" package via the CC&C club and it ticks all the boxes.

Now to start packing for the 5 hour drive to Norfolk for (hopefully) a tropical weekend

Worth pointing out that there is no need to expect breakdowns on a T25 provided it is well maintained. In 8yrs of ownership mine broke down once & it was 20yrs old when I got rid of it.

The Arrival T&Cs may well state they will transport your vehicle both ways if it cannot be repaired & this should work ok for a weekend away but within a fortnight's holiday they may well claim that you have ample time to get it repaired locally at whatever cost & inconvenience to yourself.

If you want to take p**s out of your breakdown cover you need to be creative & tell lies. If your clutch fails on the way to your holiday(this will mainly happen due lack of knowledge & understanding of your T25)Then have your holiday & phone 'em at the end & just say you are broke down again, this method works(for a while)for owners of old VWs much better than telling the truth. This works well enough in the UK but don't try it on the continent.
