Our Ducato came with a Thetford Premium LCD three way fridge with smart energy selection fitted. It appears to work ok when on the flat on all three power supplies  and also when on the move from the alternator/vehicle battery. When we try to pre-cool it on the drive before loading with food and drinks it does not cool down. Our drive slopes about 20 degrees could this be cause as I believe fridges prefer to be level.

We have had the same problem with previous vans.
If the van was on a slope, the fridge would not work. A good set of chocks helped.!

Yes it's a known fact that caravan fridges have to be level both ways (front to rear and side to side) in order to operate effectively whether operating on gas or 240 volt electric. It only operates on 12 volts when the cable is hooked up to the towcar and the engine is running but once the engine is cut then so does the 12 volt power supply as well in order for the caravan fridge not to drain the car battery.

Most fridges should work fine on 240Volts if on a slope, you shouldnt really be using it on site at 12 Volts as youll flatten your battery in a few hours. On site should be 240Volt or Gas.

Now the reason they wont work on gas on a slope is: The gas system when lit has a small flame at the bottom rear of the fridge, this flame MUST burn up inside a small tube for the heat to do its job.
Now the flame is very small and will always burn vertically, so if the van is on a slight slope the flame will burn outside of the tube or not directly into it so wont cool.
Most of the new range of fridges that use gas can work on a slight slope but not too much

Thanks for the quick replies that confirmed my original thoughts. Re use on 12 volt on site as mentioned above that is not possible as the system only works when the engine is running.

Once more thanks.

The fridge DOES work on a slope, the only reason they say not to is because of the flame, when this is lit, and if you are on a slope it can cause the flame to heat up the side protective panel, this is OK if you have the metal guard, but some fridges where fitted with a plastic guard - and when that gets hot it melts and catches fire. I know from first hand experience. It wont light becasue the ignitor is not in the path of the flame, if you take the exterior cover off from the side of the MH, you will see the cover and ignitor. Its all good stuff going on in there(as earlier mentioned by Goldseeker)

These type of fridges do not cool down when empty, they need to have things inside them to start the process, dont ask how or why, its just the way they work. If I want to pre-cool the fridge - and I usually dont bother, I would put some water bottles that have been in the house fridge over night or in the freezer.
