Hi All , Newbie here and would love to pick your brains if poss please :-)
We have a Motorhome that we desperately need to create more floor space for . We keep looking at the day tents but would love the option to sleep under canvas occasionally so ground sheet needed but do any exist please ?
We are about to sell our Vango Maritsa 600 tent which we have only used twice and love the sleeping under canvas but either the van or tent has to go as we don't get the time for both.
As we have a teenager and a little one we need the floor space whilst on site and don't fancy drive away awnings , can anyone suggest anything at all please ?

Thanks Very Much in advance

A day tent ain't really suitable for sleeping in because it has no inner tent/bedroom pod. The tunnel type drive away awnings can have sleeping pods fitted or just get a normal small tent.

..a decent Day-tent may be more versatile in the long run(..it could even be used as a shelter for bbqs/parties etc,at home)..and I'm sure you could adapt a tent inner to suit..

http://www.riverswayleisure.co.uk/acatalog/InnerTents.html

(..although I dare say,if the Day-tent was big enough,it may be able to accommodate one of the small, single skin pop-up tents,at night..)

Having said that,a teenager may prefer their own "separate" tent anyhow...

Probably not big enough for you but we've recently bought one of the pop-up Quechua Base tents to give us,additional/versatile outdoor shelter..

Hi Guys , Thanks for your replies , we didnt fancy a drive away due to the agro they seem to create and wanted one that we can just leave & go at leisure.

The Royal Day tent I have seen , does seem to have a ground sheet , so is it easy to attach a bedroom inner to these things do you think please or silly question would one even be needed once the windows are rolled down if it were just one person sleeping in there please ? And oooh yes didnt think about the other uses it would have too :-)))))

I do like the look of the Quecha but would like more head room if poss

Thanks Again

Sorry,I've no idea what's available to "clip" to...it'd be best to see one up on display..but I would've thought you could always rig up a few "clingon" type fixings somehow..

(..without any form of inner tent, condensation may be a problem..)

For us our Quechua Base Seconds is good for the job. Goes up in seconds and is tall enough to stand up in and is big enough to get a couple of chairs and a table in plus other stuff. Because of the overhanging porch bits you can get it fairly close to the campervan door but because there is more than one door there is still a way in and out. You can buy a separate detachable groundsheet and an inner bedroom pod.

we hit a problem years ago when i wanted to use a tent in the same manner the owner of the site said it would not be possible to sleep in the van  and insisted we could only sleep in the tent  as one unit ,  and the van as a car unit. the other option offered was tent on  one pitch van on another doubling the fees . but later on we brought a drive away awning  which with  awning fees is  a lot less than van and tent combinded fees ,,plus with the van and tent a six mtre rule may apply this depend on how strict the site owners are .??? some will not allow even a pup tent next to the van

i could never work out what the difference between a drive away awning and a tent apart from an bit of material which attaches to van by means of elasticated hooks or straps  . hope this helps you make your choice  and  contious happy times camping .

Probably because most drive away awnings are exactly that, tents with a couple of windows and an extra bit to fix to the van, but the one I have actually looks like an awning and in no way can be called a tent.

I  dont realy understand this statement  as I use a drive away awning on the side of my van quite regularly and it creates no extra agro what so ever and with it being a khyam motor dome it is much less  bother to put up than an equivalent sized tent ????

Thank you all so much for your replies , much appreciated . We are off to look at a Quecha at the weekend then & see if that sorts the problem :-))

Didnt think about extra site fees , may have to look into that .

Jimsmimm - Are they not alot of agro when you return to site , securing the correct line up / space and to attach ? we have a coach built van and the reviews I have read said that these matters were problems and that is why there are so many on the second hand market ?

Many Thanks

could be that the height of the coach built makes it more difficult but for me with a VW T5 its not a big problem...mark where the wheels are with a couple of tent pegs and try to get it as close to where it was parked as possible...you  never get it spot on but its no big deal...??

when we have used a free standing awning we used 4 pegs and a crab line marked a rectangle around the camper all we had to do was land our camper in the rectangle maybe a little shunting then everything should fasten together.

the other point i was trying to get across is a free standing awning next to van no problem .. a tent pretending to be a free standing awning next to the van   may cause problems on some sites ??. sorry i can't be more clearer than that . terry

A lot of free standing awnings just look like day tents with an extra flap for attaching to the van, and are very similar to put up.

I used a Quecha with my campervan - but pitched it so close to the van that I could step straight into it and it looked like an awning, none of the sites I stayed on queried it.

we have he quechua base seconds, youu can but an inner tent that fits in for £35, goes up in 2 minutes and once you have the knack folds down almost as quick.

Love ours, our van came with a safar room but have never used it as the pop up does what we need,
