I intend to buy a new motorhome but as it will then be my only transport, I need to carry a motor scooter. I am receiving extremely conflicting advice from van converters and manufacturers like "it will probably be OK" (useless, try telling that to the Police and insurers when you have had an accident). "It cannot be done legally" (probably true in most cases even though you see them about). Towbar manufacturers generally say no too, for example the nose wheel weight on my Renault Trafic LWB is only 85Kg (surprised me) and a scooter and rack is about 140Kg. Does anyone have any "real world technical experience" in this area? My choice of vehicle could be influenced by this. Seems like a full Alko chassis could be good but then if its a large overhang from the wheels it defeats the object. Van conversion looks good but even a new Renault Master is limited to 125 Kg nose weight. (unlikely to find a bike and rack at less than 140Kg)
Only need a small, compact motorhome but as I'm 6'2 I cannot sleep across most vans. (been told the Peugeot boxer may be 150Kg nose weight but not confirmed). Have considered trailers but they are not really practical for me. Not expecting to get many replies on this one!

Well i don't know what you been told to be the truth, i have had a honda sky 50 cc and a hydraulic lifter scooter rack for the past 6 years, have used on a small rapido 709 then my peugeot 2.8 talisman and now on my hobby siesta based on a ford 2.2, been to Italy/France/ just comeback from Spain (well a month earlier due to family) and all the way to Lagos Portugal to visit one of my sisters in law, NO ONE HERE AND ABROAD HAS ever stopped me re. the carrier and the scooter at the back, i would also like to add that if you feel the rear end will drop, then invest in some sort of spring assisters. Also it may be of interest to you but i'm definetely thinking of selling the lifter and the scooter if intersted. The scoot is under 5k miles.17

How did you get on with your scooter rack search?
We have a Chausson on a Ford chassis and would be interested in the results.
Have you tried PWS towbars at Poole?

The laws on carriers in general are changing. I do not know from what to what. However...My niece has a bessacar, not sure what No.  Her Dad is a policeman...her husband is ex( just) RAF Security Policing. They have always had a motorbike on the back of said Bessy....Travelled the whole of EU in it...with it. However, He has just gone to the expense of buying a Ford Ka.....and a trailer  ( I have not asked him why the change) this is all within the last 3 weeks. IF you like I will ask why, and get back to you. It could be because he does not like to get wet.LOL...But it may be for another reason. Post agin on here...no need for another topic...and I will keep my eyes on it for you. I am a nosy devil...so maybe I will ask him anyway.

Hi,..Me again. I have just been catching up with Octobers MMM...it was delivered whilst we were away, and on Page 190 and 191, is an article about Tow bars and Towing. I would suggest that if you can lay hands on a copy it would be worth a read. It is entitled "In tow with the times"......online if you cant find one.?

To my knowledge the laws on carriers are not changing trailers maybe carriers noo.

I have used a dave cooper for years to carry a race bike on the rear and had no problems what so ever.

Give dave cooper carriers a ring he will give you all the advice you need and will bespoke design a unit to fit your motor home .

Or you van have a carrier to fit straight onto a towbar , or a chassis system and he will be upto date on any legislation.
