I've recently upgraded from a folding camper to a Campervan (a nice Renault Trafic), which has a basic Seat/Bed combo in the back. As we want to be able to carry passengers we are looking to replace the current bed with a rock n roll bed with seatbelts. This would be bolted to the floor with spreader plates etc.

What's confusing me at the moment is the legislation covering this. There are sellers quoting that there are new rules from April 2012 that mean all seat/beds must pass the M1 safety standards or else must have a label saying 'Not to be used while travelling'....? But there is very little information on the web and it seems to be more aimed a professional builders under the EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval Rules?

So any help/advice appreciated. I'm looking at a few quality made beds that have decent braced frames made of high quality box steel and are bolted to the chassis with fixing plates.

Hi, Phil, not sure what you mean by "seat/bed combo", but if you mean the side-facing long seat behind the driver and the single forward-facing seat by the sliding door, why can't you carry passengers? You would simply need lap belts on the long seat and a 3-point belt on the other one.

On the other hand, if you put in a rock-n-roll bed, you need two 3-point seat belts for that.

Have you joined the RTMR? (sorry for the shameless advertising

).

Are you sure the new legislation applies to your van? I confess it's a while since I looked into the subject, but IIRC the rule changes have always applied to the date of registration as a motorhome.

I recently had a look at the inertia reel belts fitted to the rock & roll seat/bed in a new Bilbos T5 conversion, and it looked pretty complex - I doubt it will be cheap to retro-fit something like that to an existing van...

this law only applies to new vehicles and is not back dated to older vehicles, so if your vehicle has the seat but no belts as per the law at time of fitting they can not make you go back and add seat belts.
lap belts are no good and cause more harm than good,
