Hi All

Advice Please, had the motorhome 21/2 years and still enjoying every second,

Fitted an 80 watt solar and two 110 amp batterys in December to go to spain for 7 weeks over christmas,new year and havent hooked up since ,our weekends away i find myself bringing home more electric than we have taken away which is great.

We Have an 800watt electric kettle and 800 watt toaster tvs 12 volt and sat receiver is 12volt laptop and phone i charge though 12 volt sockets ,

What size inverter would i need to run the kettle and toaster.since we have all this electric left over might as well save on the gas??

I would choose a 1000 watts, ie, some of them when switched on you get a surge, although now they have improved with the sine wave systems, and so forth, but i would still go above the required wattage that you intend to use at any one time! And i do hope that you intend to use ONE ITEM and not all at once????

I looked into this,and found the cheap ones don`t deliver,and was anvised to go for this one,they are not the cheapest,but I can run a kettle,microwave,or a toaster on it,it also has it`s own built in cooling fan.

Well like my grandad used to say, always buy the best you can afford, yes it certainly looks the business, and i should think it will operate most if not all your appliances without any poriblems.17

What I have done is wired a standard three pin UK socket into the RCD where the UHU go`s into,I then plug the inverter into there,it may sound silly,but because it`s wire this way,while it`s inveting to 240 volt, it also puts a trickle charge back to the batteries.

Yes,while inverting to 240volt,because its wired into the RCD,that supplys all the stuff in the van as if on EHU.

Hehe - if I were you I'd put an ammeter on the line from charger to leisure battery to see what is actually happening!

If your van's charger has any intelligence it will sense that the battery is being discharged by the inverter, and won't be trickle charging - it will be trying to replace what the inverter is taking out.

So it will be trying to put back into the battery something like 2 Amps, which will mean that the inverter (if you assume 20% losses in the inverter and the charger) will be taking 2.8 Amps - plus whatever other load you are putting on the inverter - out of the battery!

If you take account of the fact that your inverter takes near enough 1 Amp with no load on the 240 Volt side, this is a zero gain equation. Or, more accurately, you will be wasting away the losses in both inverter and charger for a total gain of nothing.

Thanks for the top 3 replys (seems to have gone a little off track)

But £300 seems a little expensive to boil a kettle and make a couple of slices of toast.

Might leave it for now.

So my morning brew and toast cost me at the moment say a bottle of gas over 12 months = £20, A £650 inverter should pay for itself in 40 years,17

Does anybody own or tried one of the cheap ones of feabay

On EHU per week costs arround £35 on site,20 weeks away per year = £700 X 5 years of useage,= £3500, so 140 watt solar panel £190 + inverter £650 = £840.

£3500 - £840 = £2660 Saving on the long term.

Allmost paid for itself in one year.
