Afternoon all, I wonder if anyone could throw some light on a query............

The small 'cigarette lighter' sockets in the Van require a Hella plug to Cigar lighter lead - I wanted an extension lead version and have had some difficulty finding one, I have found this, can anyone advise whether it's appropriate please.

Phoned up our local Maplins - Southend - Didn't have one, just had the short versions, no extensions :(

Be cautious the unit in the link is not the one for the Hella Din socket your Burster is very likely to use.

You will need in addition a converter DIN to standard Lighter, like this example:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hella-Standard-Lighter-Socket-Adaptor/dp/B0042EYTEI/ref=dp_cp_ob_computers_title_0

The Hella plug and the standard lighter socket plus suitable wire can all be obtained from Maplins and if you have a bit of dexterity with a soldering iron you can make up your own lead of desired length; I do this as my Hymer has Hella Din sockets and all the kit I need to run has the standard lighter plugs!

Best thing is to convert all your sockets and plugs to the DIN fitting. The Cigar lighter type never seem to fit particularly well. Also the DIN type fitting can take a heavier load

Thank you - JTQU, I do already have the converter - it was just the extension I required - My soldering skills are probably questionable - pretty good with a drill, skill saw & hammer though and Husband is not 'Mr DIY' I'm afraid :)

Happy Bonzo - that doesn't sound like a bad idea - will look into it later when I'm over the shock of paying out for the bike rack, solar panel & new aerial 17

Thanks again

Sheila

The Hella connector is a purpose-built power plug and socket, and was original equipment on many European cars and trucks, even my BMW bikes had one fitted..

Cigarette lighters are a poor device for taking power from, and in many cases the wiring to the device is not that good either.

Converting to the Hella device is a good idea, we've used them commercially as well as for our own use.

There used to be a big range of sockets, including an insulated earth type, which you'll need if you are fitting into anything that you cannot get an earth connection to.

Peter
