Anyone with a campervan, short or long wheelbase, pop top or high top. What fuel consumption are you achieving please? Reports found, vary from low 30's to mid to high 50's mpg but some of these were using a variety of bio-diesels and vege oil. Also, anyone found a real improvement in fuel consumption with re-mapping? Just seen a lovely Denby Campervan conversion which could suit our future needs

It's going to depend on a lot of factors. For example, how heavily laden, whether it's a mix of town and motorway driving, and which of the two 1.9 engine specs it has, plus many others.

VW give the combined cycle MPG of the mid-spec 2 litre diesel as around 38MPG, and I doubt the 1.9 102PS engine would be significantly different.

I wouldn't consider re-mapping for economy - if anyone knows how to get the best mileage out of a VW engine it would be VW themselves.

I had a T5 for a year and half, mine was the 170 hp, engine no remap or trickery, AUTOSLEEPER TRIDENT, filled in Calais, and it took me all the way to MILANO , my nephew was getting married, so work it out mate, i must admit i'm not one to check on things like that, not even now, my transit based hobby motorhome is fitted with all sorts   and for once  i got the curiosity to find out the mileage, all the way down to Spain (L'Estartit) and back and fuel consumption was 33.7 mpg, not bad for a for a 2.2 diesel, i will check it again this coming september, going all the way down to Pompei to visit my sisters.17

I'd post your question on the T5 forum ... by the way you cant use veg oil in the T5 only the older T4 due to the injection system... I recently did glasgow to northern france in mine fully laden bikes on the back, pulling a trailer and had done over 600mls when I fuelled up with the fuel light still to come on which is another 10ltrs I was pretty happy with this as its usually around 500 in town and short trips...

We have 2 yr old short wb, pop top, 2.0L TDI.

OH reckons it does around 60mpg cruising on the french motorways, and around 50 over here. That's normal load, no bikes or trailer etc. Phenomenal is the word he used. (He's always measuring fuel economy). Ordinary diesel.

We can get to the south of France on 1 tank, but it costs about £90 to fill!

Just part-exed my 2007 T5 1.9 84bhp for a 2.2 Peugeot Boxer. VW was a swb poptop. After 3 yrs of ownership it averaged 35mpg with gentle driving. I tend to do 70% dual carriageway 30% town driving. Oddly enough the Peugeot is averaging 39mpg with a bigger engine & a rigid hightop. Maybe the engine is working less hard.

Ps you can remap for economy or torque depending on what you prefer.

Hi Boxertwin, yes we too got about 38mpg + from our previous Fiat 2.3 td Ducato. 2004 Trigano Tribute. The actual VW T5 we viewed had been "chipped" to a claimed  145ps. but assume driven carefully, we could get a good return. Thanks !
