HI , I bought a 2008 mezan autocruiser and it has an aerial socket but does not appear to have an aerial ( maybe because there is a solar panel fitted and not a lot of space left on the roof??) anyone know of anywhere reasonably local to Liverpool where I could take the vehicle and find out if an aerial could be fitted - just basic one for GB tv reception. thanks for any advice.

Hi Viv..

Sorry can't help as to a "aerial fitter" but just to say/ask,as you've got an aerial socket,is there any coax cable coiled up or tucked behind a cupboard panel somewhere?..and could you not just fit an external socket and use a "clamp-on" type aerial?

Our first van had one of the round Status Omni directional ("flyin' saucer")type and it of little/no use on digital..

Our second van only had an external socket,so we used one of these and it workd well enough for us:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikkai-Outdoor-Digital-Aerial/dp/B0023BGNBY

The reason we chose it was because it was easy to cart about and store(..although if I recall,it did require an addition power source at the tv end..)..we just clipped it to a pole, which fastened to the bike rack, although there are loads of different mounting brackets available.

Our current van came with one of the directional "through the roof" type:

http://www.gradeuk.co.uk/shop/status-550.html

..which works very well...however,if it hadn't have come already fitted,I'm not sure if I'd have had the guts to have a 50mm hole shoved through the roof?!?...

(..or indeed pay the high asking price...!)

I have actually threaded a seperate coax down down to an additional socket which I fitted just under the side skirt of the van(and covered by a rubber flap). This is so that we can connect to a site's aerial system if need be..)

If I had to fit an aerial "from scratch" again,I'd probably just look at fitting a proper external socket..and then look at just using an aerial that's easy to cart about/install...

Hope some of these ramblings help....

From my experience of digital coverage in the UK, I wouldn't rush to spend a load of dosh on some fancy dangle aerial.

We commonly use a tiny aerial on a suction mount which came with a usb tv tuner a few years back and usually do o.k. with just that. Digital signal is due to be boosted again shortly, when the final switchover is completed I think.
