Was fitted to van when we purchased.

120w panel on roof. Control unit with full and charge indicators. An LCD display which can be switched on and off and two leisure batteries under seat

So, how is it operated or is it fully automatic. What's the switch for other than turning the LCD display on?

I'm lost!

I have a solar system similar to you which i fitted myself.

120watt panel and a 10 amp controller ( 120watts divided by 12 volt = 10 amps )

I would think the previous owner installed it,

they are very simple to install 2 wires from battery and two from the panel.

batteries connected first and away you go free electricity.

The system is fully automatic the controller charges the batteries from the solar panel when they are full the charger floats the the batteries at full charge.

My controller cost £8 or less off ebay has 3 lights low, half, and full charge  second light tells when panel charging and the third is for an auxilary light when it gets dark auto switch on.

Obviously the lcd in your case has to be switched on, but if your controller goes wrong buy the cheap version

I would guess that how it works will depend on who made it and what model.

It seems unlikely that every solar controller ever made would have the same switch, display and method of operation.

If you were to say who made the motorhome it might help, rather than just saying that it's German.

Thanks Pete

Have just put a multimeter on the wires that connect from the panel to the regulator and im getting 13.5v so im guessing thats all good?

Whats the lcd display for? I switched it on just now and it reads 0.53 whatever this means.

Also how does it work in conjuction with the mains hook up as I have a battery charger under the passenger seat which charges the leisure batteries when connected to 240v. Does the solar panel cut out while the 240v hook up is connected?

Thanks

I would imagine that the 0.53 on the display could be charge current in amps.

The solar panel controller works seperately to a battery charging set up from the 230 volt hook up.

Both are there to fill the battery, when its full the solar controller stops charging and waits for the battery to want more power.

The mains battery charger works the same if the battery doesnt want any power it waits to see if it needs some its called floating,

The read out probably is amps supplied but thats low for a 120 watt which are capable of much higer output but afterall its winter.

The only way to make sure is by fitting an ammeter in the positive supply from the solar panel.

I wouldnt really bother in the summer i can cane my batteries and by mid day they are full again on float.

I doubt the country of origin really matters most of these solar set ups come from the far east as do your batteries malaysia and china and  labelled over here.

Cheers Pete

Im thinkin the same, that amp reading is low.

Will try and take an amp reading from the solar panel positive.

Thanks again

Don't forget you will never get 10amp out of it. The open circuit voltage will be around 17v so max you could possibly get is 120/17 = 7amps. With other inefficiencies
and the fact the panel is flat I wouldn't expect you to get much more than 5amps max.

Cheers

John

I'm wondering if the decimal point is in the wrong place on the LCD display. I found some info on the vdisplay and you can solder the pcb to read different things as well,as moving the decimal point.

I suspect not. You will only get towards 5.4 amps at this time of year if you have got a very, very clear, bright sunny day. Actually I doubt you will get it even with those conditions at this time of year.
