Hi folks,
I've got a Kampa TravelPod XL awning for my campervan. I think it is fantastic when it is up. Getting it erected is another matter altogether :-)

I'm trying to put the awning up by myself and I'm finding this a bit of a challenge. I was wondering if any others on the forum have any tips or tricks on how to put up a dome type awning single handedly.

My current thinking is that if I peg down the four corners first before putting the poles through, that might help.

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Robert

Cannot help that way. BUT

When we had a VW. Villa 3 high top, camper van we got a strip of awning rail and some boat glue and Bob fixed it all along one said of the van. Drilled, glued for water proofing + sticking.

The we got a long strip of a figure of 8 plastic and and used to just leave it on the awning as we went out for the day, easy to attach when we returned.

I even bought & sewed by hand a strip of the rubber insert you threadle through the rail, as I put the rubber strip inside the edge of the awning itself, turned a hem and stitched it tightly closed up.

Not only was it easier to erect, attach. But the length of it helped with a cross wind as the awning was reaching nigh on the whole length, so tying the guys round the bumper & hitch (as we had a small trailer also) it never moved, never let in rain and was comfy.

Oh! I made sure the awning part I stitched I also water proofed as the stitches would of let in water by the holes made. Always keep a cut off bit of wax candle with us even today for any water that may try to get through in a hefty downpour. Had it well over a decade.

I have the OR Touring XSL which is quite similar to your Kampa.
I find the easiest way to erect it is to feed it into the awning channel and then peg the back corners down lightly (the corners nearest the van)
I then feed the poles through and stand the awning up and pull it out into position.
I then peg the 4 corners out properly and then peg round and guy out.
I find it takes about 15 minutes if I have help and about 25 minutes if doing it all by myself (I'm a short, fat, unfit mum of 3)

Our awning specifically stated 'very easy to erect'. No it isnt. Because of the dome shape, its hard to get it 'spread-eagled four ways to get the poles in criss-cross.

But once up, ive added my own 'fix' of stretcher-bands (idea stolen from an outwell tent we had) running between the pole ends to stop them splaying out. These sit under the ground sheet and keep the shape no matter how it blows about low down.

I made them from cut down caravan cover straps with hooks on the ends which attach into the D-rings already on the ends of the poles where the awning corners attach.
