Hello Ivor
Welcome to the UKCS.
Most people would say run off your 12volt for a couple of nights as they worry in case you pitch next to them. Gennies are noisy and smelly not very neighbour friendly.
If you are out in the middle of nowhere or in a lay by etc then a Genny might help. Watch out for the cheap little ones. The power quoted will be at high - peak revs. The output will aslo be very noisey electrically and can cause damage to electronics such as TV battery charger etc. Check the specs of them when buying, the cheapest may not be the best.

Forget the Microwave and it will be quite cheap.
Maybe some people are a little too sensitive, but I have never really been bothered by the small camping sort, its the large industrials that are way to noisey. if someones got a little Honda going and you are in your van I find you cant hear it.
Wild camping should be no prob.
If you want one big enough to drive a Microwave say the micro is 700 watts you will need a bigger Genny at least 1200w cont
