Can anyone tell me which battery charger I need please? I have no access to the mains so I will have to disconnect my leisure battery in the winter. I want to forget it until spring. I have a sealed 100ah battery at the moment, but may go up to a 110ah.I really don't want to spend a fortune but I do want to look after my battery. Is it always best to disconnect the battery in the winter?

Hi,

I'm a bit confused. How are you going to use a charger if you have no mains access?

Condition of your battery will depend on its regular use and charging etc. this helps keep it in good nick. that's what a Ctek or similar battery conditioner does. It discharges and charges to a set program when connected to your battery and the mains supply.

Sounds like your winter option will be to remove the battery to your home and look after it there.

The Ctek would be a good choice and could be left to get on with it. Buy the best and most powerful (amps wise) you can afford.

I also suggest you read up on looking after lead acid batteries on the internet. lots of good info available.

Best of luck..

As you won't need it until winter, wait for the Aldi/Lidl ones to come in - they are intelligent chargers (at a bargain price of about £13) and can be left connected permanently. You don't need a powerful charger, just to keep the battery topped up.

Yes I have to remove the battery to charge it at home, but which of the chargers do I need. I am confused by the 'Physics' - and the ctek site doesn't really help.
Anyone bought one that'll do the job for me?
Thanks for the comments, (but don't use Aldi.)Is £70 enough to get something good?

Aldi and Lidl chargers are very good for the initial cost, I have had my Aldi charger about 5 years and my Lidl one about three years and both working great. First one was £11,99 and Lidl one was £12.99. If either of them failed I would not hesitate to buy another.

If you just want it for winter maintenance charging you don't need the biggest available - the MXS 3.6 should be fine. I have two of these which float charge two cars while in storage, plus one of the next size up in case I need to recharge a big battery from flat.
