Not only is money a bit tighter, but credit is harder to come by. This means less people can buy it and cash buyers tend to be more financially conservative - that's how they got the cash in the first place!

My last car sold on gumtree, which has the advantage of being free to advertise.

Mines for sale too with little interest, although its only been on ebay for just over a week.

My strategy is to reduce the price every few weeks until it sells.

It does not matter what I think it is worth or would like for it for, at the end of the day it is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and not a penny more.

whatamess notice your in north wales then go and park it on llanduddno seafront at weekends with a for sale sign and put the price in the sign, some day trippers might just decide that they want a camper when they see yours. don't despair it's coming to the camping season when people start thinking about buying.  i sold mine last year after a couple of months most intrest was in may. and earlier i managed to sell my harley davidson in winter out of the riding season, when everyone said you won't sell tell next summer. at the end of the day if someone offers you £1000 less than you are asking, it might be easier to accept than having it hanging around for another month or more.

I can't take it anywhere, it's not taxed. I did think about taxing it but, as hardly anyone's coming to view, I don't feel inclined to spend £121 on the off-chance. Only one person who has contacted me has mentioned the tax, most people just make me an offer without viewing - even when I first put it on at £7,000 people were offering me £4,000 without even seeing it. I hoped that putting 12 months MoT on it would help.

It would help putting 6mnths tax on it so it could be driven away by cash buyer who had come from some distance. Any buyer will also want a drive, even if not insured they would want to sit with you while you drive it. Anybody buying an older vehicle who is serious will want to ensure all gears are working & engine is good, they will want a 20mile drive & to check engine afterwards to ensure no oil/water leaks/nasty noises.

All these low offers sight unseen from dealers & chancers assume a vehicle that requires work & hoping for a bargain with one that dosen't. A dealer will be happy to take a cash bargain away on his truck, a serious private buyer will want to drive van away. Its a buyer's market.

If you believe your van is in top condition & worth top money then you need to present it in such a way that a serious buyer will be able to ascertain condition.

Its the same in an ebay auction, there will be plenty of low bidders, but serious buyers prepared to pay decent money will have come & checked it first or will be prepared to walk away if not happy with it.

You could broaden the number of places that it's for sale by adding in Gumtree, FreeAds and Loot? Have you got good photos and loads of them - that always seems to make a difference? You can always add in a line to the effect that as a bonus that you'll throw in six months tax to anyone who pays the asking price?

Have you thought about going off for the weekend in it and having the for sale sign on it. We have often seen ones for sale on sites. We have been thinking about buying an older campervan for some time now but have found them to be overpriced. We still dream about owning one though and hopefuly in the future will buy one.

Away from the dealer forecourts they aren't overpriced. They seem expensive, but that's just what they sell for.

My 13 year old van sold for £12k, which means it cost me less than £1k a year in depreciation and maintenance during the 9 years that I owned it. That is incredibly good value for money when you think about it.

to be able to sell, it should be road legal, £121 is not too bad if it helps you to sell it, get it taxed and put a sign in it, and park it where it can be seen, there is a big show at llanduddno, so i would park on the front near to the action so as many peoples as possible see's the van.  as after all the cool weather you never know some tent campers might be thinking of buying a van.

Our Clubman is parked outside the house, which is off a fairly busy main road. It is not for sale, but every year since we bought it, someone will knock on the door (or leave a message through the letter box) asking to buy it. It's led to some surreal conversations. "It's just what we're looking for." "Yes, we looked for several years, which is why it's not for sale." But I agree with others - it would have been too risky without the test drive round the block (seller driving). Given how many £thousands you want for it, 6 months tax isn't so much.

There are firms that will hire out your motorhome for you too - we've met them at various shows. And one of those folk may love it enough to want to buy it. We lent ours to friends, they bought one just like it at a camp site (it had a For Sale sign). On Gumtree - the lady got a second offer just after she sold it to them.

Regarding putting tax on it, I really can't afford it - and I've reduced the price of the van at least twice - and it's been advertised on Ebay, Preloved, Auto Trader, UKCS, Gumtree and a publication whose name I forget now. It hasn't been a matter of not spreading it out - although, frankly, I wonder if you can spread yourself too thinly and then people wonder why you're so desperate!

I wouldn't want to take it to Llandudno, about 40 miles away and leave it anywhere.

Anyway, it's sold now, being picked up tomorrow, and the buyer happily gave me the money to tax it for him. So all's well that ends well.

unfortunately caravan & motorhome buying & selling prices can be very disheartening  I bought my 2001 van for £18k, same van /year on a dealers front was £20k   2 days later a dealer offered £15k in part x for a 28k van but £12k as a buy price.
