Hi,
anyone know a good route for a 6m motorhome to cross from Kendal to Eskdale?
Last time I ventured in that direction I went from Grange over Sands to Ravenglass on the A590 and found some sections quite narrow with oncoming HGV,s unwilling to slow down and had to promise my co-pilot that we would never take that road again.
So, now I am faced with a long way round, anyone got any ideas for a more relaxing route??
There is no other easy alternative way. There is no problem with the A590 itself; it
is the A5092 and more particularly the A595 further are the narrow roads. However the A595 south from Cockermouth is equally
as narrow from the north as it is from the south in places, so you will be
getting the same problem whichever route you go. The A591 up through the Lakes
is also additionally narrow in parts, including a long steep hill.It is twice as far (100 miles as opposed to
50) going via the M6, but then again you still have the narrow A595 coming
south
Hi Highwayman,
If you want a relaxing route then the only way is to take the A6 from Kendal north over Shap summit and join the M6 at junction 39. Leave M6 at junction 40 (Penrith)and head west on the A66 to Keswick, then Cockermouth and on towards Workington. At the junction with the A595 take that road towards Whitehaven and Barrow. Pass Gosforth and after going through Holmrook turn left where signposted to Eskdale. There is absolutely no problem with the A595 going this way. This is your most relaxing route - but it is a long way!!
Hi John, thanks for the advice. I guess I will take that suggestion and put up with the extra mileage and cost as it will work out cheaper than a divorce!

I agree this is the best route and these roads are not narrow... Should be no problem and a lot shorter route too...

Off topic but - We once watched a caravan being towed over Hardknott Pass - it amused us and our fellow drivers in the long queue waiting to go over for more than an hour. The woman passenger was weeping when they eventually passed us. Why do some people just ignore the warnings?
