Can anyone send me to a link on Motorhome Insurance, I am about to renew and would appreciate any advice. Am currently with Saga, including European Cover.

I have just gone with safeguard, included in the price full European breakdown cover and they were cheaper than the company I had been with for 8 years.

Yeah mr PICKELS quoted double WHAT I'M ALREADY paying now and all because of my post code, in another word they don't give a fig about your driving records re. they put all the eggs in the same basket, and that was the official reply I got this afternoon, the C.CC almost 75 dearer and the caravan club will take anyone on to make you save 25 pounds and I wonder what the premium will be next year, so its STATUS QUO for me.

For the last 20 years or so of my working life I was an Insurance underwriter and I quickly discovered that the old proverb “one man’s meat is another man’s poison” to be very much true and very much in evidence with insurance companies.

Insurers base their premiums on many different factors, only one of which may (or may not be) your postcode. Your age, driving experience, marital status, vehicle type, age of vehicle, accident and conviction history, even your occupation and that of your spouse may be taken into account too.

Each insurer will view each of these factors with varying degrees of positivity/negativity depending on their own past claims experience and the philosophy of the pricing manager at the time. Each insurer will therefore rate the same risk in a different way and come up with their own premium to cover the risk.

One insurer may have had good past claims experience with a particular group of people and will want more of that business so will price them competitively in order to attract more. While conversely they will set a higher price on the business that they don’t want. As each insurer is working on their own experience it stands to reason that each would price individual factors differently, hence Mr Pickles being good for MickS and awfull for Wineciccio.

Experience grows and changes constantly, therefore insurance premiums are in a constant state of flux and rating methods under constant revision which brings to mind another old saying that is also very true…. “it pays to shop around”, just like we do with our gas, electricity, broadband, credit cards……….

Another trick that insurers play is to price low to attract new business and then price over the top at renewal. The thinking being that a good proportion of renewals will simply renew it rather than shop around thinking “if they were the cheapest when I shopped around last year I don’t need to do all that work again, I’ll just renew it” …… “it pays to shop around”……EVERY YEAR!

Me? I’m currently with LV through Insurance Choice in Leamington Spa. Due for renewal in July so I’ll start shopping again soon.

Very well explained indeed, had word with insurers and guess what reduced premium from £419 to £382, that's what I call a bit of saving.

Glad to hear that you got it sorted. Another trick worth trying is (if they're not already on the policy) is to add your spouse as a named driver, even if they'll never drive the van, it can reduce the premium.

There's also a bit of leeway to be found in the cost of brokers add on's such as legal expenses insurance (LEI) and breakdown cover if they're included. Especially if you already have these things covered elsewhere and they can remove them to reduce the costs.

I started a policy off with the Caravan Club for a motorhome about a month ago but the customer service was so appalling that i have actually cancelled (at my cost) and gone back to my previous insurer called Safeguard. Their staff are exceptionally friendly and you don't have to wait long to get through on the phone.
On the otherhand the Caravan Club insurance personnel i spoke to were quite rude, talking over me during coversations and disagreeing with me when i was reading from their own letter that they had sent out. I used their call back service and they didn't call me back. I requested a call back after 17:00 when i am away from work and they phoned me 3 separate times at 14:00!!
If this is how bad they are at customer service I would hate to deal with them for an actual claim.
My advice -- ignore the £25 renewal premium offer and go somewhere else where they care more about service and less about trying to entice new customers in to meet their targets!
