Why bother? unless you wish to pay for a new map?? you will find that in France all the roads have not changed at all unless you go to a new estate etc. the only thing/s that keep popping up like mushrooms are the roundabouts, the French seem to love the bloody things!!
You could use the Navigation App on the Galaxy or Google Maps for that matter but you would be using data on the phone which would cost more than an update on your TomTom.
Roads in France have changed over the last few years and if you dont update you will see yourself running over a field on the TomTom screen
just update the tom tom maps tho I wouldn't bother. if you are going to a rural area, its unlikely the roads will have changed that much, other than roundabouts of course! as a back up - plan your route and print it off on via Michelin, even if you find yourself in a 'field' you just kep going and you will get back on the road!
Be carefull updating to new maps.
I have an old TomTom with the original maps. I bought my daughter the same and she updated the EU maps. Now it doesnt even recognise our friends address in Paris yet the old ones do.
BUT
The old maps can throw up some odd problems especially when new roads are opened !

If the phone has a true GPS chip, using it as a satnav does not involve data. Anything internet based will do.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it
If I use an iphone with tomtom which has the maps stored on the device itself then there are no data charges.
Some other sat nav apps (google maps for example) do not store the data on the device, but the info is downloaded from the internet as and when needed which would result in high data charges if abroad.
On my last trips to France I have used tomtom on an iphone and recommend it 100%. Updated maps are released every few months for free.
------------- On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.
I live in France and I recently brought a new Tom Tom from Halfords, this one came with free lifetime updates. It also has a generous sized screen. I am quite happy with it.

That's funny, I still have my tomtom go 910, and the present one which is a tomtom start 60 and I have not got any problems with either, you just have to have 2 accounts with tomtom home thas all, and I even update my mate next door who uses a tomtom xxl, all with no problem at all.
I went to France some years ago and found the sat nav useful after I realised that I shouldn't of used the post code as this puts you into the centre of a area not to a particular road, so use the address.
I think you will find that only the UK and Holland has the facility to use full postcode, the rest of Europe have only areas/region codes which are useless.
