Good idea, does anyone know if there's a barrier on the car park next to Whitby Abbey, as thats where I hope to park one day this easter when staying on the Grouse Hill meet?

What worries me is - one day I will forget, & rip the roof off. Does anyone else have this morbid fear?

I am suprised that they didn't tell you that Colwyn Bay has parking all along the seafront. If you park close to the pier it is only a short 5 min walk to the shopping centre. In the past we have even stayed overnight on the seafront, I think they have signs saying no overnight camping but I have seen vans obviously staying overnight.

It's not just motorhomes either - we tow with a Landrover Discovery, due to the size of the family (7 people) and the weight of the van and are increasingly finding this a problem when we go out in the Disco.

We tried to visit Bath last year and were really disappointed to find that we were unable to get into most of the central carparks because the height barriers were set just on or below Disco roof height. The outer city carparks were not viable as we have a frail elder member of the family who can't walk great distances but very much wanted to visit the Roman Baths and the Abbey. After much circling we did eventually find one parking we could get into, but it was too far for her to walk to the things she wanted to see, though believe me she tried. Mum was really upset. Needless to say we won't be returning to Bath in the near future. We'll take our custom elsewhere.

You could always try the larger supermarkets if they're close enough to town. Round here they don't bring their barriers down until the evening.

Is the lady in question registered disabled?  Being disabled myself, I'd have been inclined to write to Bath Council and ask why their car parks are not in keeping with the recent Disability Access Bill.  If shops and places of interest have to provide reasonable access for Disabled people, what is the point if the local council are going to stop them from parking close enough to get to those places by installing height barriers preventing them from doing so.  I know of a number of disabled people who use high top vans/cars and motorhomes to get about in and would welcome the ability to be able to get into local car parks to view the attractions.  Just who are these councils trying to stop from using them?  I guess the obvious answer would be gypsies, but surely something can be done to allow genuine holiday makers and those on a day out to park closer to the attractions.  Might be worth investing in a wheelchair or hiring an electric scooter.  When we start getting out and about in our motorhome, I aim to write to the council wherever we are unable to park and ask why they are so against those with less than perfect walking abilities.  We use the same currency as them after all!!!

Sara - annoyed at people making others lives so difficult !

If a few more folk wrote and complained to the councils every time they are thwarted then they might start to take notice.

Perhaps we should start a campaign?

To be fair to the Local Authorities, if they didn't have height barriers then the car parks would be full of travellers' vans for half of the year, and no-one else would dare use the car park. If you look at Ireland, where they have more of this than us, you will rarely find a car park without a barrier.

I think there is generally more on street parking in Ireland, hope so anyway or we could all be a bit stuck.
