hi guys
I own a 2006 santa fe crtd (old shape) its just done 40000 miles but the garage has stated I need to replace the timing belt not because of the mileage but its age, it's going to cost £460 is there any other garages around central Scotland that someone could recommend that would use Hyundai parts and be slighty cheaper,

Get your belt done at an independant & it fails a yr later you have no comeback. Get it done at a main dealer workshop & you do, although it probably won't fail if done by main dealer.

Those who use independants will have regular garage that they trust & whose staff they have rapport with. To shop around to find the cheapest cambelt change seems a poor idea imho.

Personally I don't think main dealer is any better than a good indie. Plenty of main dealers give poor service. My colleague is having problem with VW throttle body sensor been going on for 12 months 2 dealers and they can't rectify the fault. VW UK involved now. 12 month old Land Rover Disco into main dealer for brakes and they shear a calliper bolt and send the vehicle back out for the calliper to fall off. We have several company vehicles of different manufacturers all going to main dealers and still have problems with poor quality service even after changing dealers. Reputation is the only gaurantee for me.

Having just had a cam belt go after 35k miles, I would have to agree with Tentz.  Our trusted garage couldn't do it when we needed it so we went to another local garage.  Big mistake!!

It is whichever comes first

5 years ago I got an 8 year old Ducato based MH with 28 thousand on the clock so had the belt changed due to age (should have been done at 5 years but prev owner had gone just on milage)

Paid top dollar to a large reputable diesel specialist and had genuine parts fitted, including tension rollers

1300 miles later one of the new tension rollers made an appearance through the casing.

They did the job again and replaced 3 bent valves but the previously perfect engine was never quite the same again

I have since done the job again myself, as I should have done in the first place   (was a diesel fitter in an earlier life)

Its a lottery whoever you go to and however much you pay

if you go to the Large main franchise dealers you'll pay up around £55 an hour plus vat and get some young pup on £6.50 an hour working on your car ...the biggest dealer round here is Arnold Clark and there wasn't a web site called Arnoldsucks.com for no reason....your best bet is to keep asking around and get someone who comes highly recommened by people you know ....and once you find him keep hold of him a good trustworthy mechanic is worth his weight in gold ....:)    good luck

As you say, but what I was mainly pointing out was should you get a premature belt failure, say a year or even 2 after a replacement then from a main dealer you have recourse, a main dealer could hardly argue that oe parts were not used but an independent may just laugh you off. A large main dealer group will not have cost to worry about so it would just up to you to make a good enough case. A small garage may fight you tooth & nail to avoid the high cost of fixing their shoddy workmanship using cheap parts.

A busted cambelt may put an older vehicle beyond economical repair so its probably worth getting a main dealer workshop job for that even if you use an independent for other work. The main dealer will have the specific tools to do the job & a mechanic who is familiar with the job. An independent might have neither. If you have a local garage you know & trust then all well & good but using a random one on price alone could be risky.

I think my santa fe cambelt was around £350 - you will need the extra bits, re tensioners etc. the cam belt is around £60 from memory. have you been on the santa fe forum - they will give some decent advise and might know someone local to you ?

unfortunately TenTz the reason the previously mentioned dealer has such a bad name is exactly because of the above...though they dont use cheap parts.... a good independant should offer you the choice of cheaper parts and factory stuff and give you a comparable price and usually his advice on what to use ....the hard part is finding a good one... :( .... I'm to far away from clydes to make it worth while giving him a phone no ....

Guys thanks again. I like many have had issues with Arnold clark even when I paid for the extended warranty.Only to find them trying to squirm out fixing faults that were clearly covered. and even found the auctioneers sales info within the service book, so much for a regular customer traded it in for a new car ly**g sods.

but on a good note Taggarts Hyundai of Motherwell called and offered to do the timing belt for around £400 which would include collect/return the car from Livingston.
