Greetings,
Me and SWMBO are going to New Zealand before and during Christmas to meet up with family.
We are going to use the trip to hire a motorhome whilst there and wondered if anyone on the Forum has had the experience and could recommend (or otherwise) any hire firm they may have used.
We arrive in Auckland before Christmas and have 10days to hire a 'van before meeting the rest of the family.
Any information greatly appreciated.

It was 10 years ago, but on a visit to family we hired a Ford Transit based motorhome for a week from Cruise New Zealand. The depot was close to Auckland Airport and easy to find. It seemed a good firm to deal with. We did have two problems during the week, a faulty side sliding door, and also a leaking gas cylinder one evening. We were directed to local service companies and both faults were speedily fixed.
We only hired for one week, as out trip was only for 3, but we did go on another trip by car with my daughter, using backpackers accommodation. With hindsight, considering the cost of hiring motorhomes, we felt that this would have been a much cheaper option, even if we had needed to hire a car. We were there in March, past the main season. With the time available we only did a bit of North Island, but found it beautiful, and met lots of friendly people. I was a bit disappointed at the standard of some of the sites we stayed on. Despite this I would love the chance to do it again.

WE used Kea a couple of years ago. Great van and service. one point to note is that NZ is really busy for vanning and travelling over christmas, so if you want / need special sites best to book early.

Another point that came up when we were in OZ may apply.

All companies have high , middle and low range vans ( based on age) under different brand names, so a van thats less than 3 years old is in the top range , up to 7 years old in the next range , etc . ( ages may vary by company)

Anyway when we were getting our van a young couple were handing theirs back ( bottom range say over 7 years old), and they were covered in bites from insects that only came out at night.

I 'listened in' to see the response from the staff in the company , the young couple got quite a grilling about their usage of the van, it felt to me that this was a problem that had happened before.

So I personally am a bit wary of the real budget offers especially in high season.

NZ was fantastic to travel around and the campsite facilities were great.

Hi
I live in New Zealand, and as others have said KEA is the one to go for, a really good firm. Incidently I have no connections with them :)

We are looking at doing a similar trip in February, but visiting family in Christchurch and hiring for two weeks, so will be interested in how you get on.

I've been considering these guys http://www.wilderness.co.nz/ anyone used them before.

You can do a campervans exchange. If interested I will post details. Saves a fortune.
