Wanted to visit Stratford upon Avon this week in transit with the motorhome. Called at the well advertised Park and Ride to find that  height barrier had benn added since we were there last. The attendant told us that we could park at the leisure centre in town but driving a motorhome through town centre was not something I fancied doing. So the traders of Straford lost oiut on the money we would have spent this week and in future. I thought that the point of Park and Ride was to keep traffic out of town!!

The park & ride is operated by a local bus company and was always a white elephant. Only a third full at the best of times. Because they charged per passenger on the bus, If there were four of you it was the same price as parking in the town centre carparks with out the hassle of a bus trip, so shoppers didn't us it and as it used to lock the gates at 5.30pm workers didn't either.

They've stopped taking motorhomes as they are reinventing themselves as err !!  "something else" It will soon have a train station for London commuters and charges will probably go up.

Just to add to the chaos we endure on a daily basis the council have installed numerous sets of traffic lights on the Birmingham road causing gridlock to a once free running road and they are planning more.

If after reading this you still want to visit try and approach on the old Warwick road. As soon as you join the inner ring road you take the first turn left into the motorhome carpark behind the Leisure/Swiming centre which is quite good and not to far from the town.

It is quite noticable that the local decision makers have nice houses and cars, just saying.

Rant over

The same thing happened to us, the missus said oh look park and ride and I said yeah lets do that and then we met the height barrier, we actually did go into the lorry coach park behind the leisure centre, there I had a problem with the ticket machine which wants you to confirm that you understand that you are parking at your own risk, but there are 5 buttons you could press to confirm but they don't tell you which one it is, by the time I had pressed wrongly 4 times and had my money returned I decided to not put so much in and in the end only paid for 2 hours which to be honest was just about right after we had a crappy cream tea a walk down the river and around the town and we were glad to leave.

Another place with height barriers was Rye which looked really nice but lost our custom as we couldn't park!

Thanks for telling your experiences. Startford now off our preferred list. But Stratfords loss was Henley in Ardens gain - Finished up having a good lunch at the Navigation in Wootton Wawen!

We won't be visiting Stratford then as we give towns which alienate motorhome a miss. We won't be visiting Anglesey again either... not motorhome friendly.

My partner drives for the bus company who operates this, she has complained but it was the councils decision and Johnsons have had to enforce it. There is parking for motorhomes if you use the other park and ride at the waitrose on the other side of town towards long Marston
The council also won't budge on the decision to charge per passenger despite this being challenged by the us company

Alternatively there is provision for parking motorhomes behind the leisure centre, you can also park there overnight,

I used to use the park and ride on the Henley side if town til they put that height barrier up, they won't even make an exceptin for me even if my other half is driving them that day as if the council spot it they will give johnsons a ticking off.
