Our 1991 Fiat Ducato 2.5TD needs a new gearbox bearing ( a main output shaft roller race gear bearing to be precise)but apparently it's not a standard size & the man that's doing the job hasn't manged to track one down ... we are now very worried
The gearbox itself is in great condition, just 2 worn bearings one of which he managed to get a replacement for but stumped with the other, can anyone suggest where we might try.
There are a large number of "Bearing Specialists" companies if you search Google. the old bearing should have a ref number stamped or etched onto it somewhere. the ref number details exactly what the bearing is (a roller or ball bearing. Single or double row, taper roller etc) it will also give inner and outer diameters and bearing width. From thst info a Bearing specialist should be able to cross check different manufacturers and supply or order one for you. Hope this helps. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs.
------------- cramming for my finals in the twilight zone
If you measure the length plus the external and internal diameters of the ball race (bearing) with vernier caliper first and then phone a local bearing supplier with the sizes they should be able to supply the exact size you need even if they don't have one in stock. It may take a bit of extensive search but a bearing suppier or auto transmission company should be able to despatch one by post or courier.
Thanks Dinkum & tango. Sorry I forgot to say there's absolutely nothing etched on the old bearing.
We have come up a few companies that MIGHT be able to supply the bearing but drawn a blank as to finding out what the original was & so can't establish what exactly we need !
By putting the chassis no into their computer system, the Fiat dealer in Aberdeen's system can come up with the details (part no etc) but only for vehicles from 1994 on. We'd thought that Fiat themselves would have the info - ie bearing size etc & if they still made it but ohhh no !
One company however helpfully put the chassis no etc into their microfiche which DID come up with drawings - now we have to get them to the man doing the job & hope they're clear enought to identify. If not we'll get the measurements Thank you.
Hi
I'm a member on the Talbot forum. http://www.jktowers.co.uk/ is the guy on there who is really knowledgeable about gearbox stuff. He's on holiday at the moment sadly. But there may be someone else who can help. It was suggested to try Peugeot rather than Fiat.
Hope this helps.
Thank you folks... sadly even specialist bearing companies couldn't help - ther bearing is not a standard size, seems like was a `special' one off thing... However.... found a British company who actually manafacture bearings & are making one specially & the price quoted is only a wee bit more than the nearest sized (but not same so no use) bearing our transmissions man recently got from a Fiat dealer. Wonderful, we are deleighted & VERY gland we found them on the net.
If anyone else ever has a similar problem the company is called HB Bearings & they're in Huddersfield. :D
BTW it's not really similar to the Talbots no - and apparently it was the next one after ours that Fiat produced with a gearbox that had parts also used in Peugeots - trust us lol ! Mind you the upside is that according to the very knowledgable transmissions `mannie' the particular gearbox in out one was far & away the best one, so that's a bonus :)
